Season Four of ‘Bridgerton’ Will Be Released in Two Parts — Is The Gap Necessary?

Netflix will be starting 2026 with a new and highly anticipated season of Bridgerton, the romance based on Julia Quinn’s bestselling series.

As with many other Netflix originals, the fourth season will be broken into two parts, despite public criticism. Netflix has often broken down its original series into two parts, releasing them with a slight gap-for example, Stranger Things, Outer Banks, and The Crown. The gap in these series fuels frustration over the new season’s release time frame.

After announcing the schedule time for the new season, fans didn’t hesitate to share their frustrations under the post.

However frustrating it is to wait over a month to reach the end of an eight-episode season, if it closely follows An Offer From A Gentleman, the gap may make sense for the plot. It focuses on Benedict, the second-oldest sibling in the most popular family in “the Ton”.

The first half of the book introduces a Cinderella-like story with the pair meeting at Lady Bridgerton’s masquerade ball. Our heroine of the season, Sophie, sneaks in and catches the eye of Benedict. As a typical Bridgerton does, he falls in love at first sight.

Similar to Cinderella, Sophie’s circumstances require her to leave the ball and Benedict behind. Sophie is the secret daughter of an earl who was forced to take on the role of a servant. Due to the regency-era standards, her anonymity is to relieve her family from the shame of her father’s infidelity.

An unfortunate incident brings Sophie and Benedict back together. This makes the second part of the book feel different from the first. Though it isn’t an actual gap, there is a slight change in the focus of conflict.

Netflix hasn’t given an explanation as to why they have begun breaking certain seasons into separate parts, but there are theories. One theory is that it helps prevent users from canceling their subscriptions after one month.

“Now if someone wanted to watch this one season, they have to pay for two months,” one Reddit user theorized.

Some of their counterparts, like HBO Max and Apple TV, continue the tradition set by cable TV by uploading weekly episodes. Uploading weekly episodes is a good way to build momentum. It keeps viewers coming back for more while also attracting new ones. The live conversation from viewers spark intrigue amongst those who don’t watch.

Bridgerton is one of Netflix’s most popular shows, so it’s hard to believe it’s at risk of low viewership. Specifically due to the storyline surrounding Sophie and Benedict, the new season has generated a lot of buzz.

The first part of the eight-episode season will release in January, with the second part following in February.
