Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman to Return for ‘Practical Magic 2’

Practical Magic Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman 1998 warner brothers

Before the original Practical Magic released in 1998 starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, witches were stereotyped as wicked, evil, and unattractive women who thrived on hexing innocent people. Practical Magic not only introduced audiences to a different side of Wicca (the practice of pagan religion), but also moved viewers with a story about the bond of sisterhood. If you were a fan of the original, get your “Midnight Margaritas” ready, because Bullock and Kidman are set to return for Practical Magic 2!

Practical Magic Returns with Bullock and Kidman

On June 10, 2024, Warner Bros. announced that Practical Magic 2 is in development, with Bullock and Kidman returning to their roles as Sally and Gillian Owens. In the original film, both sisters struggle with fear, dealing with the alleged curse that’s run in the family for generations. The family curse involves heartbreak and the death of their male companions who die soon after being with an Owens female counterpart. Their mother and their grandmother passed away after the sudden loss of their husbands, leaving Sally and Gillian in the care of their witch aunts, Aunt Francis (Stockard Channing) and Aunt Jet (Dianne Wiest).

Before Practical Magic’s release in 1998, audiences had primarily been introduced to evil witches like the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz (1939) or Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty (1959). In 1998, TV series Charmed released its first season, while Sabrina the Teenage Witch released its second, ushering in a new take on how a 90s witch would look. These shows incorporated attractive, friendly witches who also struggled with everyday life aside from dealing with external supernatural forces. And with A-listers like Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman starring in the magical film, witches were perceived differently than the years prior. Magic wasn’t just seen as “demonic” or “satanic” anymore, but now used in film tropes as a tool for good and conquering evil.
