To make matters worse, Daphne is kicked out of her house so that Peter and Petra can live together. With nowhere to turn, she moves in with Miles. Now in forced proximity and similar situations, Daphne and Miles scheme to start fake dating to get back at their exes.

Henry’s newest release combines humor and heartbreak, with witty banter and a plot deeper than a simple romance. The “funny story” title comes from Henry’s experience writing the novel, which she told Variety was how she entwined the book’s banter with the significance of Daphne’s broken heart.

Henry said Daphne’s “anger was a good entry point into humor,” because “most of what makes something a funny story really is things going wrong, but in a surprising way.”

In an interview with The New York Times, Henry revealed that she takes pride in being a romance author. Growing up receiving the message that the romance genre was a joke, Henry hoped that if readers liked her books, they’d learn to love romance novels, too.

“I don’t want other people to miss out on the wisdom and joy this genre has to offer, the way I did for so long,” Henry said.

On TODAY, Henry told hosts Hoda Kotb and Jenna Bush Hager more about her purpose for writing novels with happy endings.

“That happily ever after is significant, it’s the point of the story, and we get those in life,” Henry said. “They don’t last forever… but it’s so important to have stories that prioritize that joy and hope.”

Henry’s readers have certainly loved her books. Since the publication of her first big hit, Beach Read, Henry has sold 2.4 million books as of March 2023.

Three of Henry’s bestselling novels have even been approved for upcoming film adaptations. Beach Read will be directed by Yulin Kuang with 20th Century Studios. Henry’s novel Book Lovers will be adapted by Tango, with Sarah Heyward writing the script. Brett Haley and 3000 Pictures are set to adapt Henry’s People We Meet On Vacation.

In the interview, Henry shared her excitement about working with directors and scriptwriters on these adaptations.

“It really is a collaboration,” Henry said. “I really am excited to see when you take a different artist, like a director, a screenwriter, and they interpret what you’ve made, how that creates something new that you could never come up with yourself.”
