It’s no secret that Friends was one of the most popular television sitcoms in the 90s. To this day, it’s still a binge-worthy show because of its giggle and laugh therapy, as well as its relevance. Literally, most people can relate to the show in some way shape, or form. However, for some of us, it may be closure, understanding, and even a memoriam of the late Matthew Perry. If you watched Friends, you knew that Chandler was “that guy.” He was the guy that we all knew and had in our circle of “friends.” Matthew Perry became “that guy” behind the scenes and on-screen from Friends, to Fools Rush In, to 17 Again. While remembering Matthew Perry still hurts for some, it’s fair to say that he undeniably left a legacy.
Matthew Perry’s Impact on Television and Film
Perry rose to fame after his recurring role as Chandler Bing on 90s hit television series Friends, which also starred actors, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer. Before Friends, his earliest supporting roles included Sydney, where he starred as the younger brother of Valerie Bertinelli’s character. Perry also made a guest star appearance on Beverly Hills, 90210, as Roger Azarian. His hard work on camera in supporting roles and guest appearances would lead him to appear in bigger films including, Fools Rush In with Salma Hayek, The Whole Nine Yards with Bruce Willis, Three to Tango, and 17 Again with Zac Efron.
Perry was not only talented on screen, but he was also just as talented behind the scenes. He was the co-creator and Executive Producer of ABC sitcom, Mr. Sunshine, which ran from February to April 2011. He also co-produced and starred in the CBS sitcom, The Odd Couple. Not only was he gifted in writing for television, but he was also gifted in publishing. Perry wrote and published a memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which made its debut in October 2022 and became a bestseller on both Amazon and The New York Times charts.
Perry’s Philanthropy, Advocacy, and Involvement with Congress
One thing Perry was open about was his struggle and battle with substance abuse. He opened up about his battle with drug addiction in an exclusive interview and cover with People in October 2022. Like some people who have battled dark moments like this, he rallied behind those just like him. His passion for helping people recover from drug and substance abuse would lead him to become a celebrity spokesperson for the National Association of Drug Court Professionals. Perry used his personal experience and stardom in support of funding drug courts, which are specialized federal programs that aim to help individuals recover from substance abuse and reduce their likelihood of criminal activity.
Matthew Perry was the recipient of a Champion of Recovery award in May 2013, which was awarded by The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. The award was a recognition of his opening and launching, Perry House, a rehabilitation center in his former mansion in Malibu.
During the COVID-19 Pandemic, Perry launched an apparel line inspired by the hit show, Friends, where proceeds were donated to the World Health Organization (WHO) for COVID relief funding.
