After stepping away from royal duties and relocating to California in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are moving back to Britain. This month, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are heading back to the UK with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The children are both set to start school there in September.
This comes weeks after Harry and Meghan returned to the UK with their children for a summer visit. There, they reunited with their grandfather, King Charles, for the first time in four years. This summer’s visit seemed to mark a positive step in their relationship.
The Duke and Duchess will be offered a “half-in-half-out” option they initially requested, but the late Queen Elizabeth II rejected.

Harry and Meghan had not been seen in the UK since 2022 when they attended Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral. Familial relations had been strained since Harry and Meghan’s decision to step back from royal duties.
Last year, Prince Harry lost a legal battle in which he sought to regain the security his family was entitled to while in the UK. Their protections were downgraded after their decision to stop being working members of the royal family and move to the US.
Ahead of the visit in July, Prince Harry requested police protection, which was rejected, and the visit was reconsidered for the protection of his family. Now, it is uncertain what their security will look like once they’ve moved back to the UK.
The duration of their return is currently being described as an “extended period of time,” so many details about the move remain unclear. However, King Charles is said to welcome the opportunity to spend more personal time with them.
There will be no change to Harry and Meghan’s status as private individuals and non-working members of the royal family. The Prince and Princess of Wales have also been informed of this decision but have made no public comment.
