The rise in plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures has been increasing ever since the 2000s. Celebrity influencers like the Kardashians normalize cosmetic enhancements, which makes the controversial stigma around cosmetic surgery a thing of the past. But at a point, how far is too far?
Any procedure has a risk and reward system, especially if it’s for medical reasons. Although society still looks down on women getting their breasts down, for example, many cases are a result of pain, discomfort, or medical concerns like breast cancer. However, women who undergo some kind of breast augmentation for appearance’s sake are just as valid as the women who receive it for chronic pain. Breast augmentation empowers women with more confidence, more comfort, and positivity towards the way they feel about themselves.

However, the plastic surgery scale is a very touchy one and is easily tipped if it’s for the wrong reasons. No matter the procedure, it can have a beneficial impact on how the person views themselves. But once the procedures pass the confidence boosts and enter medically dangerous territory, the lines can start to blur.
As of 2025, the most common plastic surgeries include smaller breast implants, platelet and fat transfers, face lifts, and Brazilian butt lifts, or as most of us know it, BBLs.
Lingering on the BBL topic for a bit has caused quite the stir in the fitness TikTok realm. Viewers are frequently accusing popular fitness influencers with strong, prominent glutes of having BBLs now.

Not all influencers are truthful about any work they’ve had done, which can create distrust in their audience and make them feel defeated towards their own body image. Lying about BBLs can make your viewers feel like they can achieve the same body as you, and when they’re not able to, they start to put themselves down.
@kikilifts to be clear, I’m actually mad at the people who mislead you, but i think we can all practice discernment . . #fitnessinfluencer #fittok #gymtok

Lift flips are another trending procedure that enhances a person’s top lip, making it fuller and more plump-looking. Big, full lips have been a thing since Kylie Jenner and her Kylie Cosmetics lip kit era.
Shaping your lips can be a big confidence boost and improve self-esteem, but sometimes, we should question if the procedure is worth it. With more and more lip lifts, people are reporting that they can no longer drink from straws anymore. We’ve found ourselves at that very fine line again between advocating self-confidence and causing harm to your body.
@stuartbrazell Drinking out of a straw when you have a lip flip is impossible!!! #lipflip

After getting a lip lift, some people have also said they have difficulty talking, too.

One of the most general rules of thumb is to do anything that makes you happy, unless it causes harm to yourself or others. That is why speaking to a medical professional before any plastic surgery is essential to protecting your health. Plastic surgery can have an addictive effect, which leads people to want more and more work done. Some great questions to ask yourself before considering a cosmetic procedure are:
- Am I doing this for myself or others?
- Is this an overall safe procedure?
- Do I have a support system to help take care of me after the procedure?
- Is this procedure the only solution to improve my life and self-confidence?
