Paramount Merger Could See Top News and Streaming Platforms Combined

Paramount has finalized its merger with Warner Brothers Discovery (WBD), which will likely see a merger between two of the largest streaming platforms. This will also see Paramount acquiring yet another prominent news network. These acquisitions have led to questions about the future of streaming, and how the continued consolidation of digital media will impact viewers.

Bidding War

Both Netflix and Paramount engaged in a bidding war over WBD. However, after Paramount raised its bid to $31 per share, Netflix backed out. The move ended a drawn-out bidding war between the two media giants that began in October of last year. The purchase will set Paramount back around $110 billion, but by acquiring major streaming services and news channels, Paramount’s profits will likely soar.

What Will Paramount Take Over?

By acquiring WBD, Paramount has acquired HBO Max, the fourth-largest streaming platform by subscribers. With over 130 million subscribers, HBO Max alone is valued at around $82.7 billion. HBO Max will most likely be merged with Paramount’s own streaming service, Paramount+, to create a new platform with over 200 million subscribers. Much of the crucial information about this new service has not yet been revealed, such as what it will be called or what it will cost.

Alongside HBO Max, Paramount will also acquire CNN. This makes CNN the second major news network acquisition for Paramount in the past few years. Back in 2019, Paramount acquired news giant CBS. Alongside CBS’s local and national news divisions, Paramount also owns major networks for sports and digital entertainment, such as Showtime.

Paramount Controversy

Following the acquisition of CNN, many have grown concerned over the future of the network. Many are wondering how CNN’s independence will be impacted now that it is under the same ownership as CBS. With these two networks under the same management, it is unclear if the range of content will remain varied.

Paramount has previously faced controversy for its political dealings, which has led to backlash. Stephen Colbert, host of the talk show The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Paramount+,spoke out against his own network back in July of 2025. The Late Show was canceled shortly after, and will air its final episode in May of this year. While many have associated these two events, it is important to note that Paramount has also renewed both South Park and The Daily Show, which are both known for their political satire and criticism.

Changes for CNN

Following the announcement that Paramount will take over ownership, CNN released a statement regarding the future of the network. CNN stated that while viewers have many questions, they themselves do not have many answers at this time. According to CNN, executives have spoken privately about the changes that may come, but many CNN employees remain in the dark. The report also states that a merger between CBS News and CNN is possible and acknowledges concerns about editorial independence. However, Paramount’s CEO David Ellison has said he wants to uphold the news industry. Ellison plans to reach a wide audience with Paramount’s news content.

This merger is another large step in the continued consolidation of digital media, from streaming to news. While many concerns have been raised over the future of networks like CNN and streaming services like HBO Max, many questions have yet to be answered. This has left viewers to wait for any new updates from Paramount as the details are finalized.
