Nick Reiner Pleads Not Guilty in the Killing of His Parents

Over two months after the death of famed director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele, their son Nick, who was arrested as a suspect in December, pleaded not guilty in court. Nick Reiner has struggled for years with addiction and mental health issues, which have been the subject of one of his father’s films. Following his not guilty plea, Nick Reiner is set to appear in court again for a preliminary hearing.

Nick Reiner’s Struggles

Nick Reiner has previously spoken out about his years-long struggle with addiction. Reiner’s struggles, such as choosing to be homeless rather than return to rehab, became the subject of one of his father’s films, Being Charlie, in 2015. The film follows the life of a young addict, Charlie Mills, as he struggles to stay clean. Reiner was credited as a writer on the film and has stated that parts of the film were based on his own experiences.

As well as struggling with drug addiction, Reiner has also struggled with mental health issues. Reiner was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was placed in a mental health conservatorship in 2020. Prior to the death of his parents and his eventual arrest, Reiner reportedly got into a heated argument with his father at a Christmas party hosted by Conan O’Brien. The Reiners were said to have left the party following the argument, and Rob and Michele were found dead the next day. Reiner was arrested hours later near the University of Southern California.

The Death of Rob and Michele Reiner

Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their home from sharp force injuries in December 2025. Reiner’s death shocked the world, and many spoke out to remember an important figure in film, including former presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden, while current president Donald Trump criticized Reiner’s political views. Shortly after Reiner and his wife were found dead, their son Nick Reiner was arrested as a suspect.

Not Guilty Plea

Reiner appeared in court for the first time since his initial appearance following his arrest in December. He appeared with a shaved head and was not wearing the suicide prevention jacket he was seen wearing in December. Reiner pleaded not guilty, denying that he was responsible for the stabbing of his parents.

This was Reiner’s first court appearance with his public defender, after his private attorney stepped away from the case. Despite stepping away from the case, Reiner’s previous attorney has stated that Reiner is not guilty. Reiner is charged with two counts of first-degree murder, however not much else is known about the case currently.

Following Reiner’s not guilty plea, a preliminary hearing has been set for April 29. During this preliminary hearing, prosecutors will bring forth evidence against Reiner in order for the judge to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial. By pleading not guilty, Reiner has caused this ordeal to become drawn out. With more court appearances likely to come, neither side will get peace for quite a while.
