The same is true for the group NewJeans. “Bunnies” (their fanbase) were overjoyed when NewJeans released their latest single “Supernatural” on June 21.
With over 7 million views (and still counting), the song and video have been positively reviewed by fans across the world. Many have noticed that the song’s sound, in addition to the group’s wardrobe and dancing in the video, are heavily inspired by the New Jack Swing genre.

New Jack Swing is a style of music that mixes sounds from rap, pop and R&B. The genre was created by music producer Teddy Riley, and heavily used during the 1980s and 1990s. The catchy genre include notable artists and groups like New Edition, Color Me Badd, Boyz II Men, Bell Biv DeVoe, and Bobby Brown.
Reactions from the “Supernatural” Release
NewJeans are usually known for their bubbly and poppy sounds in their music, so the release of “Supernatural” surprised their fans with a considerably different sound from the group.

The Mastermind Behind “Supernatural”
So who created the perfect new jack single sound NewJeans was looking for? It was none other than Pharrell Williams. Not only was Pharrell listed as the “Supernatural” composer, but he also wrote on the song.
In addition to the group’s collaboration with the Grammy-winning musician, they also worked with Japanese designer and artist Takashi Murakami on merch inspired by the new song. Although the group are South Korean, their collaboration with the Japanese artist is anticipation of their new album that will debut in Japan.

What Should We Expect Next from NewJeans?
It was announced by their record label, ADOR, that NewJeans will be releasing a new album by the end of this year. In the same announcement, the group shared that they will also be going on a world tour by 2025.
