Just a few days ahead of its arrival to Netflix, the cast of The Union gathered at the Egyptian Theater on Monday for the film’s pre-reception and premiere in Los Angeles. Lead duo Mark Wahlberg and Halle Berry were joined by castmates Mike Colter, Jackie Earle Haley, Jessica De Gouw, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Alice Lee, and Patch Darragh, as well as their friends and family, for the occasion. Producers Stephen Levinson, Jeff Waxman, Jennifer Madeloff, and director Julino Farino were also in attendance.

The Union follows Wahlberg as Mike, a steelworker from New Jersey, whose simple life is turned upside down when he is reunited with his high school sweetheart Roxanne (Berry) after 25 years. What Mike believes is a rekindling of their romance turns out to be much more; Roxanne is now part of The Union, an unorthodox government agency that does the “dirty work” of the FBI and the CIA. After a list of every American spy is stolen, The Union is in need of an unknown agent to retrieve the list – and Roxanne thinks Mike is the perfect fit.

Suddenly transported from Jersey to London, Mike finds himself in the middle of high-speed car chases and life-threatening missions as Roxanne and her boss Tom (J.K. Simmons) attempt to train him for the most important – and most dangerous – job of his life.

According to Netflix, part of Wahlberg’s inspiration for the film came from the 1932 photo Lunch atop a Skyscraper. The image documents 11 ironworkers eating their lunch on a steel beam 850 feet in the air amid the construction of Rockefeller Center. That casual courage that characterizes construction workers was the perfect building block for Mike’s origin story.

But while the film is focused on thrills and action, it doesn’t leave romance too far to the wayside. “Roxanne and Mike’s relationship is going to define the movie,” director Julian Farino said. “For me, even the action in the movie was always about how to keep our characters integral to the explosions and fun and games.”

Wahlberg agreed. “We always felt Roxanne had to be the love of this guy’s life; he stayed where he was because he was hoping that she would actually come back into his life somehow,” he said. “That’s his entire motivation — her smile.”
