TMZ obtained public court documents confirming that Kristy initiated the divorce due to alleged infidelity on Desmond’s part. The public has been in disbelief regarding this news because they perceived the Scotts to be a picturesque couple. A lot of fans have been speculating on the different reasons as to why Desmond allegedly cheated. Here are some of the public’s reactions to the announcement, in addition to reflections on the struggles of young love.

Jealousy
Before Desmond made a public statement regarding the news, some people speculated he was envious of his wife’s success. This can be attributed to the fact that, across all social media platforms, Kristy has more followers than her husband. Compared to Desmond, Kristy has received a lot of invitations to high-profile events such as awards and fashion shows. As a result, some of the public have made assumptions that, due to Kristy gaining more notoriety, Desmond might have grown envious. While Kristy is more visible in the public eye, Desmond has also built a large following through his food and family content.

The ex-couple had previously shared that they are Jehovah’s Witnesses, which has sparked rumors about Desmond’s alleged cheating. Based on Jehovah’s Witness beliefs, couples cannot get a divorce unless an act of sexual immorality is committed. As a result, some of the public believe that alleged cheating was the only way Desmond had valid grounds to end the marriage. While some fans empathize with this dilemma, others are struggling to understand how they even managed to amass such a huge social media following. This is due to the strict practices the religion enforces on its members, as expressed on social media by ex-Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Throughout the public speculations, Desmond eventually responded via Instagram story. He started the statement by apologizing for the situation to Kristy, his family, and the public. He expressed how much he values Kristy as a mother and will always be an active father to his kids. Then he expressed how he and Kristy had already begun a conversation about separation late last year. Unfortunately, during that time, he made “mistakes” that he is not proud of, which is why they chose to divorce.
After the release of his statement, some fans empathized with Desmond, claiming he was unhappy in the marriage and clearly communicated it. Some people went as far as analyzing the ex-couple’s previous videos and referencing moments Desmond seemed fed up with Kristy’s pranks. Other fans stand by Kristy and affirm that he could have easily ended the relationship instead of choosing to stay and resorting to alleged cheating. Either way, it’s safe to say that a reconciliation between the two is highly unlikely.

The news about Desmond and Kristy getting divorced has sparked online conversations about young love. They met in middle school at 14 years of age. Eventually, they got married when Desmond was 20, and Kristy was 19. Marrying at such a young age, especially to your first love, can be easily romanticized. Some people discourage early marriage due to the lack of life experience. A lack of maturity due to limited life experience can lead to a lack of self-awareness. The person that you were in your teens will likely shift to the person you become in your 20s and 30s. So, unless your partner is willing to accept the ever-changing version of yourself, you may feel caged in your relationship.
Lack of Financial Security
A major strain in relationships is a lack of financial security. This complicates matters when a couple in their early teens or 20s wants to get married. If you don’t yet have a consistent stream of income or a college degree that can help you in the job market, sustaining a relationship becomes difficult.
It becomes even more of a priority to have your basic needs met before choosing to have children. This includes at least having access to food, housing, and enough funds to pay your bills. The current economy makes it difficult to even afford your own apartment. Since homeownership is not easily accessible, many people resort to living with roommates or staying with their parents. Therefore, you should take your financial situation into consideration before having children or planning a wedding.
Sustaining Young Love
Even though they met at a very young age, Kristy and Desmond were not only married for 11 years, but stayed together for 16 years. Since we do not know what occurred behind the cameras, we cannot assume they were happy throughout their time together. Even though their relationship is coming to an end, they are an example that young love can work. They built their social media empire together, which is proof that a lack of financial security can be overcome.
Their longevity could also be attributed to the fact that they grew together throughout the relationship. But clearly, at some point, they outgrew each other, and the relationship didn’t make sense anymore. Therefore, even though young love can face a lot of challenges, if the love matures over time, there is hope. As hard as this decision must have been, especially given the public pressure, it is an important reminder that some relationships are for a season. Just because it ended doesn’t make them a failure. Ask yourself: would you rather have a long-term unsuccessful relationship or choose yourself and trust love will find you again?
