One of 2023’s breakout sensations, New York Rapper Ice Spice finally released her debut full-length album Y2K!
Blowing up in early 2023 with songs like “Munch (Feelin’ U)”, and “Princess Diana” and her feature on Pink Pantheress’ “Boy’s a Liar Part 2”, Ice Spice skyrocketed to become one of last year’s most talked about new acts. She continued her momentum with a feature on a remix of “Karma” with Taylor Swift, and her work with Nicki Minaj on “Barbie World” for the soundtrack for Barbie (2023). Both songs received Grammy Nominations with Ice receiving a solo nomination for “Best New Artist.”
All of this success seemed to guarantee that once her long-awaited full-length album was finally released, it would only continue to skyrocket her success. The lead single “Think You The Shit (Fart)” had viral success on TikTok. Now that the record is out in full, the album was greeted with a wave of mixed reactions.
Critically, the record has been received fairly warmly. Pitchfork and The Independent gave the record its most positive scores, 7.6/10 and ⅘ stars respectively. The Guardian, NME, and The Telegraph gave it ⅗ stars, which seems to fall closer in line to review aggregation sites like Metacritic’s 66/100 and AnyDecentMusic?’s 5.7/10.
This mixed reaction can also be seen in the comments of Ice Spice’s post promoting the record. On X her fans came out in support underneath her post announcing the album’s release on Friday.

On the other hand, there was plenty of backlash, both in those replies and with Pop Base’s reporting of Pitchfork’s review of the album
no *credible* ranker of music based on QUALITY would put these two albums from this year within a point of each other… bffr pitchfork 👀 pic.twitter.com/8yhxMfMzld

The mixed reaction so far to the album means Ice Spice’s next move is less certain than ever. With her massive upcoming tour for Y2K!, it’s clear Ice Spice is trying to get as much out of the album as possible. Yet, how this debut shapes the rest of her career, and where she goes after this, is still up in the air.
