If one of your New Year’s Resolutions for 2025 was to create more, then you are not alone. But like many others, you may be stuck in the post-holiday New Year creative rut. No matter what creative pursuits interest you, creative blocks happen to everyone—here is our list of tips and tricks to avoid creative blocks in 2025!
Practice Makes Progress
Just like in sports or music, all pursuits must be committed to and practiced. Just because you’re “not feeling it” doesn’t mean you have an excuse to ignore your creative project for months at a time. Avoiding projects because of a lack of inspiration is a slippery slope and it will make it easier to avoid your creativity and harder to get back into. Make sure to set aside time daily to reach certain goals within the projects you’re working on. If you’re a writer, try to hit a certain word count daily. Crocheters, get to a certain row in your pattern before wrapping it up for the day. Painters, spend an hour or so painting every day. Hold yourself accountable for your passions, and you’ll find that inspiration grows from this daily practice habit.
Get Inspired

We’ve mentioned the positive productivity of Pinterest before, so don’t forget about it when you’re in a creative rut! The best way to get inspired is to surround yourself with other creations and creators. While the most ideal thing to do would be to join workshops or craft rooms for your specific niche, to get inspired by the other creatives around you, the second best option is to block out some time to scroll on Pinterest! Don’t just use this as an invitation to doom scroll though; set specific parameters for your searches and limit your time online.
Follow a Prompt

Whether you’re a writer, an artist, a cook, a sewist, a fiber-arts designer, or anything else, there’s always an easy way to start with a prompt. Think about how you started your journey—by following patterns, recipes and YouTube videos. Writing prompt journals are a great place to start if you have writer’s block. If you are struggling with adding creative flare to your cooking, follow a recipe, and use your added knowledge to jeuje it up. Artists, grab a paint-by-numbers or a coloring book and get back to basics, but add your own personal touch to it! Anything you can do to prompt your creativity works.
Let Yourself Breathe

In a world where we have a wealth of knowledge just waiting at our fingertips, it’s easy to get caught up in other people’s words. We may not notice that we’re doing it—you hang out with your friends, you drive home playing music, you listen to a podcast while you shower, and then you do your nightly scroll before bed. When did you have a moment of silence all day? When did you let yourself think for yourself all day? By making the effort to sit in or do activities in silence, you’ll benefit your creative flow—we can only accept so much information into our brains in one day and we can’t form our own opinions on them until we turn all the outside noise off. This may look like limiting your scrolling or meditating, but whatever option works best for you will get your gears turning!
Start a New Project
If you find yourself constantly getting bored or stuck on one specific project and you can’t get yourself over the hump, start something new! This doesn’t mean that you’re discarding that other project for good, but you can’t even practice your creativity if you’re stuck on something for a prolonged period. It’s always good to take a step back from a project that isn’t benefitting you, but also try not to sacrifice your sacred creative time, so starting on your next project will help you keep flowing!
Try Something Different
The best way to get over a bump if you’re REALLY stuck is to get away from that niche in general. Try something totally out of your wheelhouse. Switch to collating, painting or playing an instrument. You’re still doing a creative project, but you’re getting away from the thing that had you stuck. While you’re pursuing this new avenue, see how you’re feeling and notice any new creative techniques that you can bring to your old project to get it started back up again.
