It doesn’t take a genius to know that pets in costumes are adorable at Halloween. Although, why just stop there? For this spooky party, consider taking it a step further and curating a costume for yourself that includes your fuzzy best friend. Get creative and reap the benefits of being with a cute animal.

Tips for a Great Joint Pet Costume

Anyone can put a sweet baby in a sweater, but it takes a special touch to optimize them as an accessory. Follow these tips, and you just may be on the right track.

1. Play to Their Strengths

It doesn’t really matter if a costume matches your pet’s appearance, but it can add a nice touch to make it a more polished idea. If given the choice, an orange cat will be a better pumpkin and a black cat a better bat. A big, fluffy dog would be a better lion than a hot dog. Start with a costume that fits your pet, then find a matching one for yourself.

Of course, that’s not a hard and fast rule. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter, and sometimes playing on the opposite can be way more fun. A teeny animal dressed as a vicious beast is the perfect level of irony and will surely get you some laughs for your costume. Halloween is the day we can playfully pretend to be something we’re not. Why shouldn’t our fur babies get the same chance?

2. Turn to Hollywood

Finding good pet costumes can be hard sometimes, especially if you struggle to find one for yourself. In that case, recreating pets from movies and TV is a good fallback. This is another good place to play to your pet’s strengths: your Beagle could be Snoopy, your Great Dane Scooby Doo, or your orange cat Puss in Boots.

Still, don’t feel confined to their appearance, or even their species. Your pet can be any movie character you want them to be if you put your mind to it. Pets have made great cartoon characters, comedic reliefs, and even A-list stars.

3. Niche Is A-Okay

Your pet does not have to wear the same costume as everyone else’s. The reason we may feel afraid to not have people understand our costumes; the lack of attention and recognition can be awkward. However, if you’re rolling with your BFF, their cuteness and willingness to wear the costume you put them in will get all of the attention for you. Just having a pet there in a costume will take the pressure off of your outfit to deliver.

3. Don’t Be Afraid to Get Absurd With It

While they may be easier, pet costumes go way beyond just characters and animals. They can really accessorize any costume you want if you have the idea and execute it. Pets look great as food items, accessories, or any inanimate object you’d like. Put your pet in the spotlight and let them shine and steal the show; the sky’s the limit.

Any responsible pet owner will, of course, make sure their furry companion is safe and comfortable, regardless of what the costume is. The Animal Humane Society suggests precautions such as avoiding toxic materials, ensuring that movement isn’t restricted, keeping heads and feet uncovered, and monitoring for signs of stress. Cute as costumes are, they aren’t for every pet, so you shouldn’t push it.

Since your pet is so cute, you really can’t go wrong on Halloween. Any of the costumes here are solid picks, but they barely scratch the surface. You can do anything, but there are always premade options for the less creative, and spooky accessories for furry friends that don’t like clothes. As long as you do what you and your pet want and agree on, you will have the happiest Halloween together.
