Honoring Malcolm-Jamal Warner: an Actor and Musician Icon

July 20 was filled with grief. 54-year-old actor and musician icon, Malcolm-Jamal Warner, tragically passed away while on vacation in Limón, Costa Rica with his family. 

His untimely passing was due to a swimming accident while taking his daughter out in the Playa Grande waters. After a tumultuous current, bystanders were able to rescue Warner’s eight-year-old daughter first, before seeking rescue for Warner. The Costa Rican Red Cross was able to retrieve Warner and are sending him in order for his family to properly honor him. 

His presence will be felt by many— from film, to television series, to music, Warner’s influence is expansive. To list all of his projects would take an entire page, but highlighting just a few of his standout contributions is more than enough to showcase his legendary status and undeniable talent.

Warner became a household name after his role on The Cosby Show as Theodore Huxtable, Cliff Huxtable’s (Bill Cosby) son, which placed him in the running for the 1986 Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series Emmy Nomination. After an impressive eight-season run, Warner emerged as a trailblazer in curating a dynamic collection of Black films and sitcoms that left a lasting impact on viewers. His body of work includes a range of beloved classics such as A Different WorldThe Real Malcolm XThe Fresh Prince of Bel-AirContradictions of the HeartThe Magic School BusThe ListMalcolm & Eddie, and Sherri—just to name a few.

In recent years, Warner starred in streaming titles such as 9-1-1Suits, and Alert: Missing Persons Unit

His work is even more cherished, because of the purpose behind it. After paving the way for future actors in the industry, Warner stamped his influence with his own venture, his original Not All Hood Podcast

“When we talk about the Black community, we tend to speak of it as a monolith when the reality is there are so many different facets of the Black community, and we wanted to have a space where we can really explore, discuss, and acknowledge all of those different aspects,” said Warner in an recent interview with People.
