Soon after the House of the Dragon season 2 finale, HBO Max released the official trailer for their other hit show The Last of Us. The live-action adaption (based on the critically acclaimed video game The Last of Us) was nominated for 24 Emmys in 2023 and stars Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Pascal and Ramsey are set to return in their roles on season 2!
The Last of Us… Where It All Started
It’s been 11 years since the release of popular video game The Last of Us Part I. The critically awarded video game is set in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by a fungal infection that turns humans into monstrous creatures. The story follows Joel, a hardened survivor, and Ellie, a teenage girl who possibly holds the key to curing the infection and saving humanity. As they journey across a desolate, dangerous America, they encounter various threats, both human and infected, while developing a deep, complex relationship. The plot explores themes of survival, loss, hope, and fatherhood. The series has been praised for its emotional depth and faithful adaptation of the game’s original storyline.
Where Did We Leave Off In Season 1?

In the first season of The Last of Us, we follow the journey of Joel and Ellie in a post-apocalyptic world. The season begins with a prologue set in 2003, showing the viewers the initial outbreak of the “Cordyceps fungus infection,” which infects the world and turns people into violent, zombie-like monsters. Joel loses his young daughter, Sarah, during the outbreak.
The story then includes timeskip to the year 2023. Joel, now a survivor living in a quarantine zone, is tasked with smuggling Ellie, a teenage girl who is immune to the infection, out of the zone. This leads to Joel and Ellie facing numerous obstacles as they travel across the country. Throughout their journey, Joel and Ellie develop a strong bond (much like a father and daughter).
What To Expect in Season 2?
If the screenwriters and producers remain loyal to game’s storyline, then we will be introduced to several new faces in season 2. These new characters will cause more heartbreak and challenges for Joel, and most of all, Ellie. The Last of Us II video game centers on Ellie and her character development, and highlights the idea of how far we are willing to go for the people we love and care for.
