Hayley Williams, lead singer of the band Paramore, has debuted her new project “Power Snatch,” and one of their first singles is a cover of rising indie project “This Is Lorelei.” This cover adds to a growing list of artists who have covered songs by the indie star, shooting “This Is Lorelei” to even greater heights in a very short time.
Amos and This Is Lorelei
“This Is Lorelei” is the solo project of Nate Amos, a name familiar in the indie scene as he has been active with his band Water From Your Eyes since 2016. Amos formed Water From Your Eyes in Chicago alongside his friend Rachel Brown. “This is Lorelei” marks Amos’ venture into the role of frontman, as Brown is the vocalist for Water From Your Eyes, while Amos covers the instrumentals. “This is Lorelei” has gained notoriety for Amos’ ability to blend his melancholy into catchy hooks, widely becoming recognized as a remarkable songwriter.
Amos has long been active both on Soundcloud and with a series of side projects such as “Beetles” and “My Idea.” “This Is Lorelei’s” most recent album, “Holo Boy,” serves as an introduction to Amos’ previous Soundcloud releases, as he never intended for the project to receive so much attention. “Holo Boy” is a re-recording of past songs from a number of different releases in order to let new fans become familiar with his old works before “This is Lorelei” became his focus.
Williams and Power Snatch
Following the fame Amos achieved with the release of “This Is Lorelei’s” first studio album, “Box for Buddy, Box for Star” in 2024, many musicians began to take notice of the rising talent. Williams, best known for her role as lead singer in the rock band Paramore since 2004, has recently released a new single for her new band, Power Snatch, alongside producer Daniel James. Following the release of their debut EP “Assignment”, Power Snatch released a cover of “This Is Lorelei’s” song “Perfect Hand”.
Williams announced Power Snatch’s first release seemingly out of nowhere. Their EP was quietly uploaded to Bandcamp in February, and according to Pitchfork, their cover of “Perfect Hand” led to the eventual forming of Power Snatch. Williams released their debut EP shortly before the Grammy Awards, where Paramore’s most recent album “Ego Death at the Bachelorette Party” received four nominations, but did not receive any awards.
Celebrity Covers and Growing Fame
This is not the first time a notable musician has covered “This is Lorelei,” with a series of artists taking to the stage or the studio to pay homage to Amos. Some of the artists who have covered “This is Lorelei” include indie legend Waxahatchee and indie rock project “Snail Mail.” Other rising artists in rock and indie have covered “This Is Lorelei”, such as Cameron Winter of Geese and MJ Lenderman, who are friends of Amos’.
The traction Amos has gained has not only benefited his solo project but also helped his band, Brown, grow. Shortly after the release of Power Snatch’s cover of “Perfect Hand”, Water From Your Eyes announced that they would be performing at Lollapalooza this year in Chicago. Amos took to Instagram to express how much this means to him, as Lolla was the first music festival he attended while he was a high schooler in Chicago.
With Amos’ projects gaining so much traction in a short amount of time, it is likely that he will become a staple within the indie scene. With such a large catalogue of releases and projects, Amos will likely continue to experiment with his music, and with the support of rock legends like Williams, it seems that he cannot fail.
