Season 21 of ABC’s iconic Bachelorette series premieres tonight, this time following Jenn Tran, a Bachelor nation fan-favorite, as she embarks on her own journey in pursuit of love. All About Jenn

Tran first caught audiences’ attention as a cast member on the most recent season of The Bachelor. Though Tran competed against 32 other women for the affection of Joey Graziadei – and made it to the final 6 – she did not leave the show with an engagement. Since she didn’t get her happy ending with Joey, fans were delighted when ABC announced in March that Tran would be The Bachelorette’s next lead.

Tran is currently studying to be a physician’s assistant, often taking her social media followers through days in her life during her clinical rotations. The 26-year-old has been open about the delicate balance she’s maintained in the pursuit of love while ensuring she can complete her education.

As a Vietnamese American, Tran will also be the franchise’s first Asian American lead. This comes after several years of criticism surrounding the franchise’s history of a lack of diversity – it wasn’t until 2017, nearly 15 years after The Bachelorette’s premiere, that the series featured a person of color as a lead.

In late June, two of the show’s executive producers discussed the series’ lack of diversity  in an interview with the LA Times. “It’s hard to say out loud, that people of color didn’t see themselves represented, that they did not see The Bachelor franchise as a safe place,” said producer Bennett Graebner

“We had extensive discussions with Jenn prior to filming,” added Claire Freeland, another EP on the show. “She is proud of her Vietnamese culture and she wanted to know if she could speak about that. We told her we wanted her to be her most authentic self.”

Tran echoed her excitement to represent her culture in the Instagram post announcing her season. “First Asian Bachelorette?” she wrote in the caption. “You have no idea how much this moment means to me … this opportunity to find love as the Bachelorette is so much bigger than myself and I am embracing that whole heartedly.”

All About the Men

So who are the men competing for Jenn’s heart? This season’s cast is composed of 25 suitors from across the U.S. and Canada. They range in age from 24 to 35 and come from a variety of professional backgrounds; while some work in the medical field like Tran, other contestants’ job titles include sommelier, Army Ranger veteran, and startup founder.

Though we’re not sure how the season will unfold, we do know there’s some drama ahead. Tran confirmed to People that the men had a few tense moments throughout the season, though she opted to “let the boys fight it out themselves.”

And while we don’t know if she leaves with an engagement, Tran confirmed that she is content with how her season ends. “’I’m very happy with the ending and I’m very happy with the way everything panned out,” she told People. “’I learned so much every day that I was there [to find out] about myself and what I wanted in a relationship. There was so much growth.”

The Bachelorette Season 21 will premiere tonight on ABC and Hulu
