Doechii impressed fans with her recent Tiny Desk Concert, which some claim to be the best performance from an artist thus far. After the release of her mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal, she received critical acclaim. This led to 4 Grammy nominations: Best Rap Album, Best Rap Performance, Best New Artist, and Best Remixed Recording. Unsurprisingly, Doechii received the most nominations by a female rap artist.

Her recent self-choreographed performance on The Late Show with Stephan Colbert confirmed that she is a multi-talented force. Shortly after her Tiny Desk Concert was released on YouTube, it quickly went viral. Through her intentional musical production, creative expression, and artistic visuals, Doechii showcased a masterclass in authentic storytelling.

Musical Production

Doechii’s holistic musical production was evident. Each band member played a pivotal role in enhancing the quality of the performance. In addition to being collectively harmonious, each musician was highlighted in different parts of the performance. This included the bassist, the trumpeter, the drummer, and the background vocalists.

Doechii was masterful at giving the audience a taste of different musical genres, such as jazz infusion, hard punk influences, and soulful melodies. Such emphasis highlighted the story she expressed in each song. She even had a praise break where the band broke into a celebratory musical interlude, reminiscent of a gospel performance from a Black church choir.

During the performance of her hit song, “Nissan Altima,” she rapped even faster than she did in the original and enunciated every word clearly. This is a testament to her breath control. Additionally, Doechii beautifully executed her narrative singing during “Boom Bap” and “Denial is a River”. Through these songs, she intentionally utilized various musical instruments during specific moments to carefully spotlight her storytelling.

Her performance provided a little bit of everything. The upbeat dance music and the melancholic and soulful instrumentals took the audience on an emotional ride. A flawless transition from one song to the next was well curated. It made the entire performance sound very authentic and polished. Doechii showcased a musical production that many would consider theatrical and deserving of being on Broadway.

Creative Expression

Her beautiful form of creative expression shined throughout the Tiny Desk Concert. Doechii has an unmatched stage presence. This was evident based on the tonal variation she expressed throughout her performance. Her introduction with “Boom Bap” was effortlessly animated and demanded an engaging reception from the audience.

In her narrative song, “Denial is a River,” her supporting vocalist, DJ Miss Milan, was like a great supporting character. Miss Milan emphasized the storytelling with her expressive narration. During this song, Doechii and her band members dramatically engaged in a breathing exercise. She highlighted her authentic creative expression through her body language and facial expression.

Doechii introduced the song, “Catfish,” with an aggressive growl, affirming her ability to embody different characters in the individual performance of each song. Her incredible cadence and ability to maintain the attention of the audience are a testament to the fact that she is a seasoned performer. Not only can she rap, sing, and dance, but entertain as well.

Artistic Visuals

Another highlight of the Tiny Desk Concert was the artistic visuals of the performance, which were displayed through the all-Black women band members. Doechii was well-coordinated with the rest of her musicians. They all had a cohesive clothing style and matching hairstyles of cornrows with beads. The musicians wore pleated skirts with collared shirts and sweater tops. It reflects Doechii’s unique fashion style; classifiable as academic with a mix of risque.

The fashion style also reflected the cover of her mixtape, Alligator Bites Never Heal. On the cover, she wore a similar style, with green being the color to highlight her swamp theme. A few of the band members had accents of green, confirming the intentional detail Doechii put into the visual aspect of the performance.

“Black Girl Memoir” was the only song she performed that wasn’t part of her recent mixtape. She specifically dedicated it to Black women as the final song to conclude her performance. It was an appreciation of Black women that was amplified through the representation of an all-Black women’s band.

Multi-talented

Even though Doechii has been producing music for a while, 2024 has solidified her artistic powerhouse as an artist. As a well-rounded performer who can write, rap, sing, choreograph, dance, and entertain, her creative bounds have no limits. On top of these skills, Doechii has a very alternative style, which presents itself within her music, performances, and fashion style.

Her most recent 175 percent increase in Spotify streams can be attributed to her eccentric and authentic storytelling on Stephen Colbert’s show. In addition, new audiences were introduced to the self-proclaimed Swamp Princess through her Tiny Desk Concert. Her unapologetic self-expression is her superpower, and in maintaining it, fans anticipate that Doechii will have longevity in the music industry.
