Demi Wants To Go Fast

Demi Lovato has come back with another hit. She has given us a sexy, fast-paced song for the summer.

Fast”, Lovato’s new single that came out on August 1. It is an electronic techno sound. A funky beat. It includes a hot and sexy synth base. Its sensual lyrics captivate the audience. It is reminiscent of her songs “Cool for the Summer” and “Really Don’t Care.” “Fast” makes it her return to pop music.

Her previous two albums are strictly rock music. The album Holy Fvck is made of original songs, followed by Revamped. It is a compilation of some of her biggest hits turned into rock anthems. It was a departure from the music she had put out before that.

Throughout the video, Lovato has a sultry, stoic face, ignoring all the chaos happening around her. She is in a pink strappy top and a sheer mid-length skirt. Along with a wet-damp hair look to complete the ensemble.

The song wastes no time with an introduction. She begins singing mere seconds after it begins. The lyrics talk about wanting someone in a sensual way. “’Cause baby, honestly, I just wanna feel your hands all over me.” The beat dropping in her first chorus is marked by an exploding car that doesn’t even seem to faze her.

This is a darker version of “I Love Me.” In “I Love Me” she was appreciating her past, embracing it. In Fast, you can see Lovato walking around, ignoring everything going on around them. Ignoring alcohol, the cigarette, ignoring the mayhem. You see pageant girls eating, girls who worked out a lot, a clinic, small details hidden everywhere, even just in one second frame.

She doesn’t seem to take herself too seriously in this new era of pop techno. We see her pass by a window of TVs. Each shows a different viral moment in her career. One shows her performance in the film Camp Rock, featuring her famous ‘Dis-knees’ where she bends her knees inward, which many call iconic. Another feature when her head was shaved, and was given the nickname Poot Lovato. It was around 2015 when Tumblr created a fake backstory for this character.

The third is her singing to ghosts in her Peacock docu-series Unidentified with Demi Lovato. The fourth shows her interview where she is asked what her favorite dish is, and she answers with “a mug.” The last shows an old YouTube video of her responding to a fat-shaming commenter.

With all of this, the song and music video have gotten mixed reviews. With some Twitter users are blaming her team. As there was a lack of promotion for the new single. Others say it is a peak experience while listening to it in the car. The song itself isn’t her very best, as we’ve heard from previous songs. But that can happen when testing the waters of a new genre. While it’s not new for her, the sound specifically is.

As described by atwoodmagazine “From the jump, it pulses forward on a high-octane synth line, tightly wound percussion, and glistening layers of electro-pop shimmer. The beat is club-ready but never faceless. It carries attitude, sleekness, and precision, like a sports car on a neon-lit motorway.”

It has pop elements but also EDM elements. The kind you would party at a rave. The kind you jump when the beat drops and wave glowsticks around. It differs from her music that was used as a therapy or outlet for Lovato. As said in an interview with Chicks in the Office, “I’m not in that place anymore. I’m not in a bad place in my life where I need to write these emotional songs. I’m happy, I’m in love, and it’s just not that deep anymore.” She seems to be chasing a new sound that feels like an era of Lovato we haven’t seen before.

Lovato isn’t returning to the pop genre as any of her past selves. With the song’s readiness to make you dance. It fills the ears of many. It reminds us of the remixes we hear on the radio. Its pulsing beat powers the song through and through.

“Fast” seems to be the sound of the true Lovato, not the one curated by the headlines or TV, but the true Lovato. It’s a breath of freedom. An expression of liberation from all the dark sides of herself. She’s not looking to solve her problems through love, but taking the wheel and swerving around them herself. Fast is a great introduction to what we can expect to hear from Lovato on her ninth studio album. It has no set date for release yet. It’s all coming up Lovato. It’s saying that she’s going to have fun and no one can stop her.
