The 16th Annual Governors Awards delivered a moment to remember when they awarded the prolific Debbie Allen with an honorary Oscar. She was recognized for her influential presence in Hollywood and her role in creating timeless TV moments.
It was truly a night to remember, with Allen commemorating the evening with a party alongside other Hollywood stars. She danced the night away, alongside Tom Cruise, who was also awarded an honorary Oscar that night.

What Is an Honorary Oscar?
Whereas a traditional Oscar is awarded for a single credit, an honorary Oscar is given to someone who has made an impact in the film industry. And Debbie Allen has made one of the biggest impacts there is.
After being brought on to direct The Cosby Show’s spinoff series A Different World after its first season, Allen transformed the show into a creative beacon that showcased many important real-world topics. She is also credited as director/producer in episodes of many other popular shows. Some of those shows include Insecure, Everybody Hates Chris, Girlfriends, and Grey’s Anatomy.
She isn’t just a director/producer; she is also the founder of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy, which opened in 2000. The dance academy’s website features a spotlight section dedicated to its alumni. Amongst the names of popular dancers are two prominent figures, Misty Copeland and Corbin Blue.

Allen has jumpstarted many careers, both in dance and acting, and her contribution to the industry is truly inspiring. According to Black Enterprise, throughout Allen’s career, she has won five Emmys and one Golden Globe. With 50+ years in the industry, an award honoring her influence in the industry was long overdue.
