Bye-Bye Bennifer: JLo and Ben Affleck Divorce After 2 Years of Marriage

Following months of public speculation surrounding the status of their relationship, Jennifer Lopez filed for divorce from Ben Affleck on Tuesday after two years of marriage. The This is Me … Now singer and actress filed the documents at Los Angeles County Superior Court and listed the official date of separation as April 26. To the surprise of many fans, the documents did not indicate whether there was a prenuptial agreement between the A-listers. 

Though the couple tied the knot in 2022, their romance was first sparked nearly two decades earlier. The pair met in 2002 on set of the film Gigli, where they starred opposite one another as Los Angeles mobsters who fall in love during a difficult mission. At the time of filming, Lopez was still married to her second husband Cris Judd, but finalized her divorce from him that July. Soon after, she and Affleck went public with their relationship, and in November, Affleck proposed. 

While the couple’s wedding was planned for September of 2003, they shared in a joint statement that they’d decided to postpone the ceremony due to the intense media attention surrounding their relationship. “We felt what should have been a joyful and sacred day could be spoiled for us, our families, and our friends,” they wrote. 

But the relationship would soon fizzle out. In January of 2004, only four months after postponing the wedding, the couple confirmed that they’d split.

Both Affleck and Lopez went on to marry other people; in June of 2004, Lopez married Latin singer Marc Anthony, though the pair later split in 2014. Affleck tied the knot with actress Jennifer Garner in June 2005, but the couple filed jointly for divorce in 2017. 

In 2021, fans were hit with early aughts nostalgia when rumors began swirling that Affleck and Lopez were back together. The couple went red-carpet official at the Venice Film Festival that September. In April of 2022, Lopez shared that Affleck had proposed once again. They were married in Las Vegas in July and held an additional wedding ceremony in Georgia that next month. 

Many thought the duo had finally gotten their happy ending. But when Lopez released her documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Told in February 2024, fans couldn’t help but notice that Affleck did not seem as comfortable publicly divulging information about their relationship as Lopez did. Just a few months later in May, People reported that the couple were living separately in Los Angeles; rumors of a separation have been ongoing ever since. 

“She tried really hard to make things work, and is heartbroken,” a source close to Lopez told People. “The kids are a top priority, as they always have been.” Affleck and Lopez have yet to comment publicly on the situation.
