The teaser for the fifth season of Bridgerton has come out, and there are some mixed reviews. Let’s take a look at what the previous season held and what is expected to come from the new season.
What’s the Show About
If you haven’t seen the show or haven’t been keeping up with it. Bridgerton focuses on the drama and scandals faced by elite families navigating the marriage market. Very loosely based on the Regency era in England. There is a writer under the pen name Lady Whistledown, who is revealed to be Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) during season three. It is traditional for each season to focus on the life of a different Bridgerton looking for love. The previous season focused on Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and the nature of his relationship with Sophie Beak (Yerin Ha)
Season Four
It is a Cinderella-esque story as Benedict meets Sophie at the first ball of the season, a masquerade, where she is hiding her identity. Benedict then goes on a hunt for the girl in the silver gown. We see the trials and tribulations that occur. Sophie is in his life without him knowing that she is the girl from the ball, and he ends up falling in love with her while trying to find the mystery girl.

One thing we didn’t love was that at the end of Part One of the season. Benedict asks Sophie to “be my mistress.” It is fitting for Benedict’s character, as he is known as a bit of a “rake.” But as we watched, it felt like the progression between him and Sophie disappeared. Much like the other seasons, the lovers end up together after a lot of issues that could be solved with conversation.
There were also side stories, one including Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and her husband John (Victor Alli), where they are living life as newlyweds, trying to conceive, and John ultimately dies in his sleep, leaving Francesca and his cousin Michaela (Masali Baduza) to mourn for him. We are then left with Michaela leaving and Francesca seeing that there is nothing of Michaela’s left in the house.
What the Actors Think
Tudum released a video featuring the costars discussing the upcoming episodes. We will be seeing more of an introvert and an extrovert interacting and growing with each other. “As much as she is a sheer character and a more introverted character, there is a feeling that she doesn’t always need the validation that other people seek,” Dodd, 30, said. “But I don’t think there is self-assurance there yet.”
“I’m excited to explore Michaela’s vulnerability,” Baduza, 30, told Tudum. “I think I’m excited to see what it’s like when she doesn’t have to run and she doesn’t have to hide and she’s forced to, like, stay still.”
Michaela’s character isn’t married and freely travels. She was very close to her cousin John. Her and Francesca’s different methods of mourning caused a clash between them.
Production of the fifth season has started. There are still other Bridgerton siblings who have not found love yet: Eloise (Claudia Jesse), Hyacinth (Florence Hunt), and Gregory (Will Tilston), who will eventually get their own seasons after Francesca.
Fan Reactions
There are mixed fan reactions for the upcoming season, as Eloise’s story was meant to come before Francesca’s new love story.
Fran needs to take a season off grieving John, whilst building a friendship and slow burn with with Mic, we need El at the front 😭😭😭I can’t watch her do a bunch of nothing for yet another season pic.twitter.com/2uRZyxT303

I'm pissed off, both for Eloise who's now a totally ruined character, for the actress who is 40 years old and still has to play a teenage girl, and above all because the story would have made more sense if Francesca's grief had been natural, lasting, and respected.

Some complained that Eloise will be too old by the time her season comes around. While Jesse will still be playing a teenager despite being much older. Others are celebrating the queer representation in the show. While some say it is too soon after John’s death for Francesca to be pursuing a new relationship. That their relationship should be built on friendship and a slow burn.

Overall, we are excited for the upcoming season. It will not come out until late 2027, possibly early 2028, so we still have some waiting to do. Perhaps they will make Louise a subplot for the season to lead into her story next. It seems the fans are craving it. Having this representation in the show is a warm welcome, and Bridgerton continues to be very inclusive. We can’t wait to see more teasers and what will come for the new storyline.
