If you live close to a beach (or a man-made one), consider spending your special day under the hot sun with the cool ocean water. The beach is a perfect quick getaway that you can enjoy solo or with friends, and at a low price!
Before your big day, head to your favorite grocery store to pick up the beach necessities. This could be chips, fruit, and beverages so you don’t have to buy anything from overpriced boardwalks.
In my opinion, a sandwich is the perfect beach lunch. This could be a sandwich crafted from your home or one picked up on the way. As a New Jersey native, Wawa sandwiches are always a must-have for any beach trip. If you aren’t from the East Coast, Wawa is a popular 24-hour convenience store and gas station chain known for its made-to-order sandwiches, snacks, coffee, and quick fuel stops.
You can never go wrong with the beach, but don’t forget to pack your sunscreen and to bring lots of water to stay hydrated.
For those in the N Crowd who are 21+, beaches with boardwalks are a fun spot, too! If you’re not a big drinker or under the legal drinking age, you can still enjoy a fun time at boardwalks without drinking. Boardwalks have games and restaurants, and some even have rides. Even if you don’t want to spend money on games or food, just walking up and down boardwalks, with or without friends, is still enjoyable to chit-chat, listen to music, or just observe.
Barbecue Party
Everyone loves a good barbecue. Whether you have the biggest backyard, the smallest, or none at all, anything works for a barbecue party. The key to a perfect barbecue lies in the food. The best part is that these foods can be your favorite ones! For me, my dream barbecue includes hamburgers, chips, fruits, salads, refreshing drinks, and of course, desserts. Sticking with the summer theme, some dessert ideas can be an ice cream cake or popsicles. But, this party is to celebrate you! Whichever food and desserts you bring out are perfect.
Barbecues can be a bit intimidating when you think about all the food you have to prep, but if you want the easy way out, you can purchase most items from a grocery store. While some may offer different entries, drinks, desserts, and sides, you can stick to one specific item to cut down on the cost. This also helps to prevent any food from going to waste. The decorations and presentation doesn’t necessarily matter to make a good party, all you need are your favorite humans and foods!
Partying on a Budget
As I said before, parties don’t have to hurt your wallet! With items from dollar stores, you can create the perfect party in the comfort of your own home. Plus, it’s cost-effective!
Instead of buying a cake from a fancy bakery, try making one! It can be as simple as using a box cake, but the decorating is where it gets fun. With decorating gadgets from a dollar or craft store, you can create a delicious, homemade cake for half the price that it’d be from a bakery.
The whole cake process can also be a birthday activity! With your the help of your friends and/or family, all of you can come together to create a special cake that can’t be replicated from a bakery. If baking isn’t your forte and you want to stay in budget, you can also buy a cake from the store and decorate it. Not only will these taste delicious, but be an even sweeter treat since it truly was made with love.
For decorations, dollar stores also have tons of different items and crafts you can use. Balloons, table cloths, streamers, centerpieces and fancy cups for drinks are all found at dollar stores, giving you a cute setup that’s low budget.

Celebrating in the Big City
Ah, New York City, the city that never sleeps! If you live nearby or are willing to travel, NYC has endless places to enjoy your special day. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money, consider having a picnic at Central Park. Around almost every corner, there are small pizza shops that sell slices for 99 cents. If you aren’t a big pizza lover or looking for other options, there are tons of walkable restaurants to order takeout from.
If you’re looking for an activity, NYC has many to choose from. The Frick Collection is a beautiful museum with collections of European pieces. On Wednesdays, the museum offers a “pay-as-you-wish” admission, making this a fairly cheap place to spend the day. Other days are $30 for adults and $17 for students with I.D. There are other museums as well, such as The Met or the American Museum of Natural History. Tickets range from $20 to $30 for adults and students, but are well worth the price.
Lillie’s Victorian Establishment is an Irish-Victorian restaurant with two locations in NYC. Both restaurants are decorated year-round with rotating themes as the seasons change. While this beautiful restaurant is a bit on the pricier side, the interior is completely worth it, especially if you’re looking to take some pictures. The restaurant also has a brunch, lunch, and dinner menu.
NYC is full of surprises. If you aren’t quite sure what to do in the city and these ideas aren’t the most appealing to you, you will 100% find something from just walking the streets.
At the end of the day, birthdays are really about spending time with the people you care about most. No matter how big or small the celebration is, summer birthdays are always a great excuse to enjoy the warm weather and make good memories. Whether you’re at the beach, in the city, or at home, make the most of your special day and celebrate in a way that makes you happiest.
