After almost 20 years as a broadcast and digital journalist, it’s hard to believe I’d never attended the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Convention. This event is a big deal, especially for Black journalists. It’s not just about career fairs and panel discussions; it’s a weekend full of motivation, inspiration, and from what I’d heard, it’s like a big family reunion. So, this year, I finally decided it was time to experience it for myself.
The Legacy of NABJ
The NABJ has been around for nearly five decades, advocating for Black journalists and providing a space for us to connect, share experiences, and uplift each other. It’s more than just a convention; it’s a movement that ensures our voices are heard in newsrooms across the country.
Attending the NABJ Convention had always been on my radar, but with a busy career and life getting in the way, the timing never worked out—until this year.
The Road to NABJ 2024
In the months leading up to the event, I volunteered with the local Chicago Chapter to help prepare for the five-day extravaganza. We wanted to show off everything that makes Chicago special, from Cubs and Sox games to the city’s rich history. We had a packed schedule, and we were excited to welcome journalists from all over the country.
Wednesday: The Kickoff That Wasn’t
Wednesday was supposed to be the big kickoff, the day when everything officially started. But it ended up being the most disappointing part of the convention for me. There was some behind-the-scenes drama with the leadership inviting a guest who wasn’t exactly welcome, and it caused a lot of backlash. Some people even canceled their attendance or stepped down from their roles. For me, protecting my peace was more important than getting involved in any of that drama. I made the tough decision to skip the kickoff reception and focus on my own well-being instead.
Thursday: My Personal Kickoff
Once things calmed down, I headed over to the Hilton Chicago on Thursday to meet up with my good friend Jacque Reid, who’s a longtime journalist and NABJ member. My first stop was the registration desk, and I have to say, the process was super smooth. They even gave us a cute little swag bag—nice touch, NABJ!
After registering, Jacque and I grabbed lunch at Planta Queen, which I highly recommend if you haven’t tried it. The food was amazing, and it was the perfect way to start the day. I caught a few panels after lunch and then headed home to prepare for the panel I’d be speaking at early Friday morning.
Friday: Panels & Positivity
Friday started bright and early with the Independent Journalist panel, where I joined Reggie Ponder of The Reel Critic and Victor Aragon of Fandads.com. Our discussion was all about giving journalists the tools and tips they need to succeed as independents. As someone who’s been doing this for a while, I know how valuable that guidance can be. Being your own boss isn’t for everyone, but if you choose this path, having a roadmap is crucial.

The panel started with just a few people, but before we knew it, the room was full. The energy was great, and it was clear that the attendees were getting a lot out of it. Afterward, many people came up to me, eager to collaborate with my digital publication, Just N Life. It felt so good to know that what we shared was not only inspiring but also practical.
Saturday: Let’s Get Digital
Saturday was one of the busiest days for me at the convention. The day started early as I accompanied my intern, Uma Lynch, to her first in-person interview ever. She interviewed writer/director Tina Mabry and author Edward Kelsey Moore for Searchlight Pictures’ The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat. She also got to interview Amber Shana Williams, an actress from The Chosen. Watching Uma handle those interviews like a pro was a proud moment for me.

Later in the day, I met up with Uki, our photojournalist at Just N Life. Uki was there to capture my panel, Launching Your Digital Path, where I was joined by Jacque Reid and Marqueeta Curtis-Haynes. We talked about giving journalists the confidence to start their own blogs, podcasts, or YouTube channels. The room was packed, and the discussion was a hit. It was amazing to see so many people leave feeling inspired and motivated. Jacque and I were so pumped that we’re even thinking about collaborating on something new together.

Sunday: Gospel Brunch
Sunday was the last day of the convention, and they wrapped things up with a Gospel Brunch featuring Yolanda Adams, DJ Canvas, and more. The event was packed, and I was working, assisting with talent and being an extra point of contact for all the A-listers in attendance. Meeting Yolanda Adams was such a highlight—she’s just as kind as she is talented. She sang her heart out, and it was the perfect way to close the convention. After four days of non-stop events, I was exhausted. I was still recovering on Monday!
My NABJ Experience: A Recap
Even though the week started off a bit rocky, my first NABJ Convention turned out to be an amazing experience. It really did feel like a family reunion. Everyone was so welcoming, and it was great to finally meet people I’d only connected with online. I also made some new connections that I’m excited to nurture in the future. The NABJ Convention was everything I hoped it would be and more.
I was hesitant about staying involved after the kickoff day drama, but I can’t deny I’m excited for next year—might have to start planning now!
