Barbie Dream Fest just wrapped up, and many attendees and fans are beyond disappointed.
From March 27-29 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the convention celebrated everything Barbie. Unfortunately, the event is being criticized online for its haunting similarities to the 2024 Willy Wonka Experience and 2019’s Fyre Fest.
Organized by Mischief Management, the event promised a group of “real-life role models from sports, science, activism, fashion, and storytelling.”
Guests included Angel Reese, Serena Williams, Madison Marilla, Emily Calandrelli and more. Reese, Williams, and Marilla were spotted and posted about the Fest, while Calandrelli cancelled her appearance on March 28 due to health reasons.

Outside of celebrities, panels and meet-and-greets featured designers (including Barbie designers), scientists, athletes, and other big figures. Additionally, organizers promised exclusive merchandise, concerts, a roller rink, interactive Barbie sets, and more. Unfortunately, everything about this event was heavy with promises but short on delivery.
Some Barbie fans paid nearly $500 for a weekend “Dream Pass” to “Barbie Dream Fest,” which promised an ’80s roller rink, a Barbie Dreamhouse photo op and more — but some say the experience wasn’t quite the dream they hoped for. pic.twitter.com/mHcLd3zGTk

The “life-sized” Dreamhouse turned out to be a cardboard cut-out. In addition, the decor and materials were lackluster and cheap looking. Many activities turned out to only accommodate children, although the convention was advertised to welcome people of all ages.
Attendees flooded social media with videos and photos of the event, held at the Broward Convention Center. Many said they paid between $75 and $300 to attend this event. This was not including extra payments for merchandise or services.
this is genuinely worse than that because the Willy Wonka thing was put on by some random person using Ai art to advertise and the Barbie Dream Fest was an official con put on by Mattel with big name sponsors (Michaels, Unique Vintage, Impala Skates, etc) where did that money go? https://t.co/M74B6P967Q

Mischief Management responded to an attendee’s email on Monday, March 30, and promised partial refunds to 3-day passholders. It is unclear if refunds are only for 3-day passes or for anyone who purchased tickets
Fans resorted to spamming judgment and disappointment on Instagram, Reddit, X, and more. Considering other Barbie marketing ventures in anticipation of the award-winning 2024 film (i.e., Malibu Barbie Café, Barbenheimer, etc.) were so successful, this was a huge let-down for Barbie fans.

At a former Malibu Barbie Café pop-up location in Chicago at Electric Garden, bright pink remnants have stayed abandoned since the café’s closure in October 2023. Even with the still-active marketing for Malibu Barbie Cafés, the pink skeleton of what was a bright spot to enjoy food and drinks is now a reminder of what Barbie was.

Currently, the Dream Fest website only says the following: “Thank you for joining us at Barbie Dream Fest. Please contact help@barbiedreamfest.com with any questions.” There haven’t been further posts or statements from the Barbie Dream Fest social media, as of this writing.
