The film that gave us a steamy tutorial on how to properly remove a wedding ring is back to raise our heart rates once more. That’s right, beloved romcom, My Best Friend’s Wedding, is getting a sequel!
Starring Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz, the original story centers around Roberts’ Julianne Potters. We follow Julianne as she embarks on a mission to disrupt the ceremony of her best friend and his bride-to-be. As a true romcom does, it sends you on a rollercoaster of emotions, while leaving room to make you laugh. It perfectly captures how it feels to be on the outside as everyone you know starts to fall in love.
When the original film was released in 1997, it gained a box office total of nearly $300 million. 30 years later, its popularity hasn’t wavered as it remains in notable lists of best romcoms. The film’s veteran status gives it a fanbase that is particular so the stakes for the sequel are high.

In a 2023 interview on Watch What Happens Live, Roberts admits she would like to catch up with Michael and Kimmy from My Best Friend’s Wedding. While the film has the stamp of approval from the Oscar winner herself, one can only wonder how many sequels Hollywood plans on green-lighting.
With remakes of cult classics like Freaky Friday and Mean Girls, it feels like the trend is never-ending. Hollywood, like any other business, is and will always be about turning a profit, and nostalgia is a money maker! People want to catch up on their favorite characters, and because they already know these characters, it won’t take much to fill those theatre seats.
It may be fun to catch up with characters from our favorite films, but the investment in original stories is worth the risk. Going into sequels to your favorite films can also be scary if the changes alter the original story’s purpose.
Though this isn’t exclusive to just one genre, the storytelling in romantic comedies is what makes them popular. The originality adds to the flair because it shows that there are a hundred different ways to fall in love.
So far, there has been no word about whether the film will follow the original cast and plot. Thus, keeping us romance connoisseurs on our toes. However, it has been confirmed that director and playwright, Celine Song, is the screenwriter. Song has created a few notable original stories, including Past Lives and Materialists. Both films are stories that feature a love triangle with old friends. So, there’s a chance that us dedicated fans may be in good hands.
