Palermo, a stunning seaside city tucked into Southern Italy, is home to views of the Mediterranean framed by soaring hills and classic Italian architecture. Apart from its incredible views and crystal-clear water, Palermo has an active nightlife, beautiful churches and picturesque ports. If you find your way to Sicily this year, here are five must-do’s during your visit to this gorgeous coastal spot.
1. Rent a Boat
How could you not go boating in the Mediterranean? There are tons of rental services in Palermo and along the coast, and many times at completely reasonable rates. Whether you want a private excursion, a group outing or to solo it, there are tons of avenues for your perfect trip to sea. Click&Boat and travel websites like Get-Your-Guide and Triviago are great sites for finding the best rental option for you. The views of the coast from the water are unbeatable, and the perfect spot for a little apertivo!

2. Venture Out
Palermo has plenty of beautiful sites and things to do, but if you’re interested in seeing other parts of Sicily, catching a train to some local spots is easy. The nearby Cefalù is a popular destination and boasts stunning beaches and a picturesque town. A train is only about 45 minutes from Palermo and is close enough for a half-day trip. There are several beautiful, quieter towns along the coast of Sicily just one train ride away.

3. Visit the night-bars
Palermo has a vibrant nightlife, with cheap cocktails and plenty of street vendors. Near the central area, there are tons of streets chock-full of bars and hundreds of people enjoying the atmosphere with music and food. Head to the central area of the city and you’ll find tons of bars and restaurants, and for decent prices. Plus, there’s no better way to experience Italian culture than with an Aperol spritz in hand.

4. Head to the historical district
In every European city, checking out the historical center should be at the top of your travel bucket list. Palermo is full of history and has stunning architecture—and, of course, a number of breathtaking cathedrals. In Palermo’s main square, you’ll find the Norman Palace, the oldest building in the entire city. Nearby is the Palermo Cathedral, a 12th-century Norman church. No matter where you venture in the city, treasured pieces of Sicilian history are everywhere.

5. Eat everything!
Italy is famous for its food, and the Sicilian region certainly contributes to that reputation. All of the Italian classics are available, so prepare your palate for some delicious pasta, pizza and focaccia. Although there are obviously tons of stand-out restaurants in Palermo that tourists love, honestly any food from local spots will be mouth-watering. The best part of any vacation is the food, and Palermo certainly delivers.
