Adrien Brody, recipient of the Oscar for best actor in The Brutalist, broke records on Oscar Sunday with the longest Oscar speech in history, as confirmed by Guinness World Records. The previous record, held by Greer Garson, amounted to 5 minutes and 30 seconds, during her best actress award acceptance in 1943. Brody’s speech surpassed this and totaled to 5 minutes and 36 seconds, and was only one of the reasons why the internet was talking about him the next day.
Brody, a longtime actor, received this high honor for his role in The Brutalist, a 2024 drama film. This was his second Academy Award, which made him confident when going to accept his award and give his speech. As is custom, each winner is allotted 45 seconds for a speech, and afterward the orchestra will start playing them off. However, when the orchestra started to play Brody off the stage, he replied with, “Please turn the music off. I’ve done this before…It’s not my first rodeo.”
This delay in programming caused the Hulu live stream of the 2025 Oscars to crash, resulting in an early cutoff. The overtime made Hulu-viewers miss the live stream of the final two awards: Best Actress and Best Picture.
When accepting his first Oscar in 2003 for best actor in The Pianist, Brody also made waves in the media. As he approached Halle Berry, who was presenting the award, he swept her up and made out with her on stage… non-consensually.
22 years later, Halle Berry called us back to that very same moment in Oscars history by approaching Brody on the red carpet and kissing him on the lips. This was in front of his wife, Georgina Chapman, whom Berry apologized to right before the kiss.
So, the 2025 Oscar Awards were quite the big deal for Adrien Brody… maybe for all the wrong reasons. For future’s reference, don’t kiss women on stage without their permission and don’t go overtime for your Oscars speech. Otherwise, you may make the internet very mad…
