Dune: Part Three Trailer Teases a Finale to the Acclaimed Trilogy

Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides in a promo poster for Dune: Part 3.

The trailer for the third part in the Dune trilogy has recently dropped, and fans are excited to finally get a look at the conclusion of Paul Atreides’ story. The trailer revealed a series of new characters, played by stars like Robert Pattinson and Anya Taylor-Joy, as well as new looks for the returning cast, with familiar faces becoming worn from years of war. This will be the final Dune film by director Denis Villeneuve, despite the trilogy only covering a small part of the Dune series.

Villeneuve and Dune

Dune: Part Threewill cover the events of the second Dune novel, “Dune Messiah”. Messiah is set 12 years after the events of the first Dune novel, whose story was split between the first two Dune films. Along with a jump in time, the tone of the film also shifts, moving from the epic of Part Two to a political thriller focused on Paul Atreides, played by Timothee Chalamet, and his struggles to rule.

Villeneuve will return as director, but he has stated that this will be the final Dune film he directs, as he wants to focus on his family and other projects. He first took on the task of directing Dune in 2017, though the first film did not come out until 2021. The Canadian director is known for mind-bending thrillers like Prisoners, but he has also created visually stunning sci-fi films such as Blade Runner 2049 and Arrival, making him a perfect choice to adapt one of the founding fathers of sci-fi for the screen.

New Characters and Big Finales

A looming end to the series seems abrupt to some fans, as the films will only cover two out of six mainline Dune novels, leaving a majority of the series unadapted, as there are currently over 23 novels in the Dune universe. Others feel that this is the perfect stopping point as it will wrap up the story of Paul Atreides. After Messiah, the subsequent novels become increasingly difficult to adapt into film, as frequent jumps in time make casting a major challenge.

A series of posters released alongside the trailer, which tease the return of a number of stars, such as Chalamet and Zendaya. With the ending of Part Two hinting at tensions between Chalamet and Zendaya’s characters, it’s likely they will face new challenges after years of war and Paul’s political marriage to Florence Pugh’s character, Princess Irulan. This tense dynamic is sure to give all three stars a chance to shine.

The trailer has also teased the introduction of a number of new characters, introducing some of the franchise’s most captivating villains, most notably the shapeshifter Scytale, played by Pattinson, who plots against Paul. Also joining the cast officially is Taylor-Joy as Paul’s prescient sister Alia, who appeared briefly in part two.

#RobertPattinson on going blonde and trying not to sweat on the set of DunePartThree: “You can’t sweat because it ruins makeup. And I’m like, ‘Ahh, this is physically impossible!’ But it was so cool. It was one of the most incredible experiences I’ve ever had on a movie.”

Pattinson and Zendaya

With the addition of Pattinson to Dune: Part Three, he will co-star alongside Zendaya in three films this year. The two will play fiancés in the new A24 film The Drama, releasing this April. Then, in July, they will both appear in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated adaptation of The Odyssey, as Antinous, a suitor to Odysseus’s wife Penelope, and Athena, the goddess of wisdom.

Chalamet’s Golden Path to the Oscars

With so many big names attached to the film, it is likely that Dune: Part Three will become a favorite during awards season. After Chalamet recently lost the Oscar for Best Actor to  Michael B. Jordan, and following the controversy over his comments on ballet and opera, many feel this film could restore him to audiences’ good graces and finally earn him the award he has been seeking. Chalamet received praise for his performance in Dune: Part Two, and Part Three will allow him to explore his role as a villain, a portrayal some have noted during his recent Marty Supreme press tour, even though he has never received an Oscar nomination for playing Paul Atreides.

Dune: Part Three will release this year, but fans have a long wait ahead as it will not arrive until December. The first trailer has given fans much to look forward to for the conclusion of the trilogy, and many are already convinced that it will become one of the great film trilogies, alongside legendary film franchises like The Lord of the Rings.
