My Mom Jayne: A Documentary of Trauma, Loss, and Forgiveness

Jayne Mansfield

The talented and compassionate Mariska Hargitay, known for her long-running role as Detective Olivia Benson on Law & Order: SVU, steps behind the camera for the first time with My Mom Jayne. This profoundly personal documentary explores the life and legacy of the actress Jayne Mansfield, her mother. Premiering at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, the film is now available on HBO Max.

Born Vera Jayne Palmer in 1933, Jayne Mansfield became one of mid-century America’s most beloved sex symbols. Her captivating performances in classic films like The Girl Can’t Help It and Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? brought her fame. Beyond the screen, she was a classically trained violinist with an IQ of 163, as reported. She was also fluent in multiple languages. Her eccentric “Pink Palace” home became a symbol of her larger-than-life personality. Tragically, her life was cut short in a car accident in 1967 at just 34. She left behind five children, including Mariska, who learned so much from my mom, Jayne, despite being only three at the time.

The film blends archival footage, family photos, and interviews with those closest to Mansfield. These include press secretary Rusty Strait and Hargitay’s siblings. One emotional revelation comes when Hargitay discovers her biological father is not actor Mickey Hargitay, as she believed. Instead, it is entertainer Nelson Sardelli. The moment adds another layer to her exploration of identity, legacy, and truth within the story of Jayne Mansfield, her mom.

An article by TIME magazine’s own Stephanie Zacharek has lauded the documentary as “a powerful act of catharsis.” It acknowledges Hargitay’s ability to uncover “emotional truths and painful memories” as she reconstructs her mother’s narrative. The publication appreciates Hargitay’s honesty and her efforts to bridge the divide between myth and reality. Viewers have connected with the film’s raw sincerity, rich archival content, and the deep emotional resonance of its revelations. The revelations, especially those relating to Jayne and her legacy as told by My Mom’s daughter, are resonant.
