Emily is your go-to for all things about plus-sized fashion…
While I love giving back to my community all the time, the holidays really inspire me to support new causes and people. As someone with a background in nonprofit work, it is honestly one of the most fulfilling parts of my career and personal life. Over the years, I’ve found that the most impactful nonprofits surround cancer treatment initiatives or Toys for Tots during the holidays. If you’re looking for places to donate or volunteer that are more niche or speak to your identity, here are some more great causes to support this holiday season and new year.

Sylvia Rivera Law Project
Named after the trailblazing Puerto Rican-Venezuelan American queer rights activist, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project honors this Stonewall badass by providing resources to transgender/gender fluid communities in the U.S. The nonprofit focuses on low-income queer people of color who need housing, access to healthcare and assistance with steps to living their true selves, such as a seamless path to legal name changes.

If you’re passionate about the LGBTQ community and supporting their journey to a free identity and success, then this is the perfect place to donate. You can also volunteer for the organization at their New York headquarters, become a member for free and stay up to date on their newsletter.
National Women’s Law Center
Empowered women are leading the fight for gender equity every day. That’s the epicenter of the National Women’s Law Center, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing rights for fair wages, reproductive rights, child care support and more through public policy changes. Through experienced, committed and forward-thinking lawyers, this organization has championed gender and racial equality since the early 70’s.

Take a look at the many ways you can support the National Women’s Law Center here.
L.E.A.D. Center for Youth
L.E.A.D. Center for Youth is an organization based in Atlanta that supports the success of Black youth through sports, particularly baseball and tennis.

Founder and CEO CJ Stewart is a former outfielder for the Chicago Cubs and is passionate about breaking down barriers to success like crime, poverty and racism, especially in communities with at-risk youth. L.E.A.D nourishes the natural athletic talent of young Black boys as a catalyst for academic growth opportunities.

Artisans Beyond Borders
This next Tucson-based nonprofit has a special place in my heart because I’ve worked closely with the very people running it, including immigrants and asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border using embroidery to support their finances and mental healing.

These women consist of immigrants and asylum seekers from Latin America who use weaving and embroidery to make beautiful art for sale as a means of income. Many of them and their family members have been stuck at the border for a long time and use art to cope with the hardships they face during their journey to the U.S.

These artists, called bordadoras, craft the most detailed and thoughtful designs that share compelling stories of resilience. Take a look at their website to support them by buying products like hand-embroidered tote bags, makeup pouches, necklaces and more. You can also make a donation here.
Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary
If you’re a dog lover like me, this nonprofit is calling your name. I’m particularly passionate about senior dogs, as they deserve a peaceful and loving few years before they pass the rainbow bridge. This organization, located in Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, finds “Geezer Guardians” for senior dogs with disabilities.

These dogs are deemed unadoptable due to their age and medical conditions but are available for fostering until they live out their last days. Through donations, the Old Friends Senior Dog Sanctuary covers all medical costs and bills for foster parents of these furry friends. Learn more about the organization here.
Harmony House for Cats
Don’t worry cat lovers, I haven’t forgotten about you! Based in Chicago, this cat rescue and adoption center is special because it is a cageless, no-kill shelter. All the kitties roam freely while waiting for their forever homes.

The obvious way of giving to the shelter is by adopting one of their cats. However, if you aren’t able to do so, they’re always looking for monetary support for pet supplies, cleaning supplies and more. If you’re in Chicago, you can also volunteer to help clean the shelter.

There are thousands of nonprofits making the world a better place each day, and while we wish we could list every single one, we hope one of these organizations resonates with you, especially during this holiday season. Please let us know of your favorite places to give back in the comments or on our social media!
