Pop-Singer MARINA Branches Out in Brooklyn with ‘Eat the World: A Collection of Poems’ Book Launch

Iconic British electropop singer, songwriter, and record producer MARINA (formerly known as Marina and the Diamonds) has recently broken into the world of poetry. The singer, whose most famous hits include “Primadonna,” “How to Be a Heartbreaker,” and “Bubblegum Bitch,” has been performing and making music for nearly 20 years. She has amassed a cult following of “Diamonds” who love her lyricism, and in the same poetic voice that her fans love, she has published her first book: Eat the World: A Collection of Poems.

On October 28, Marina took to New York City for her book launch event. Hosted by powerHouse Arena bookstore in DUMBO, Brooklyn, this event was everything fans were hoping for.

After about a two-hour wait, ticketed guests entered the spacious bookstore and the first 100 buyers received signed collections. And then came the anticipation…when would fans get to see Marina in the flesh?

She came out promptly, accompanied by journalist Kathy Iandoli, who interviewed the singer and new author. Attendees learned about Marina’s process of writing this book—which did involve tripping on psilocybin—and her mentality about entering fields she isn’t familiar with. Although she’d never written poetry before, Marina figured it was worth a try, and now has an exciting and well-composed first collection. Marina said she feels that this collection may be more intimate than her music, seeing as there’s no way to lie in poetry. If you’re interested in seeing past Marina’s pop-star persona and further into her mental-health advocacy journey, definitely check out Eat the World.

She then opened the floor for fans’ questions. One fan, Bacho Nozadze, chose to ask Marina if, in this collection, readers would learn what happened on Marina’s seventeenth birthday—in reference to her song “Seventeen” where she alludes that it was a bad birthday. She laughed and said unfortunately no, but that readers will learn plenty of other things about her.

Marina closed the NYC leg of her book tour by reading the last poem in her collection, “Eat the World.”

Even though we won’t learn about the nitty-gritty details of Marina’s seventeenth birthday, her new collection, Eat the World: A Collection of Poems, promises to be spectacular. If you are a fan of witty lyricism and mental-health introspection, this collection is for you.
