The year was 1997, and teen slasher movies were booming across theaters. Horror films like Scream (1996), The Craft (1996), and Night of the Demons 2 (1994) upped the ante in what was expected next by Hollywood, but what followed introduced a new set of faces to the slasher scene that would positively be received by a young audience. Since then, teen slashers and reboots have maintained their popularity, including the 1997 classic I Know What You Did Last Summer. Because of this, Sony Pictures recently announced their decision to reboot the popular film with a brand new cast!
I Know What You Did Last Summer has been recognized as a horror cult classic, easily notable for its charming and attractive cast and the plot’s originality. The original IKWYDLS introduces us to a young friend group made of high school students: Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Ray Bronson (Freddy Prinze Jr.), and Helen Shivers (Sarah Michelle Gellar). These 90s icons debuted to the Hollywood scene after the initial release of IKWYDLS on October 17, 1997.
When the group of friends go out for a late-night drive while drinking, they face the repercussions of their poor decision-making. After running over a pedestrian, and assuming he was dead, they decide to get rid of the body. What follows is a series of mysterious deaths within the group. One by one, each friend receives a chilling written message, “I know what you did last summer,” before meeting their demise. Julie James investigates to find the hooded killer behind the chaos.
The new cast includes Camila Mendes, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Hauer-King. The reboot is set to be released in the summer of 2025.
