March 21 marks 20 years since Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey posted the first tweet on the now-famous social media platform.
just setting up my twttr
— jack (@jack) March 21, 2006
The famous blue bird icon and the platform associated with it started as a side project Dorsey worked on while employed at podcast tech company Odeo in 2006.
Twitter gained traction following promotion at the 2007 annual South by Southwest conference. It continued to grow in popularity, eventually becoming a mainstream form of social media.
Since Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform and infamous re-brand to ‘X,’ many still call it Twitter.
On March 20, Pop Base posted a tweet calling for users to repost and share their favorite tweets of all time. This tweet alone has gathered nearly 330 million views since posting.
Twitter turns 20.

What is your favorite tweet of all time? pic.twitter.com/DGhHGxY6SI
Many users find it funny that so many users still refer to X as Twitter, while others show screenshots of long lost or deleted tweets that are still so funny to this day.
the way no one’s calling it X 😭 they really thought they did something with rebrand https://t.co/G9E9h1FRV8

Users also pointed out how many tweets took swings at Musk and his questionable decision to buy and rebrand Twitter.
The now-CEO purchased the platform for $44 million in 2022 after months of legal and public disputes. He followed the purchase with layoffs, firing high-level executives, and a complete redesign of the app.
Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in! pic.twitter.com/D68z4K2wq7
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) October 26, 2022
Musk officially changed the name to ‘X’ in 2023. The famed color scheme for Twitter—a bright blue and white—switched to a black-and-white scheme.
Users largely disagreed with Musk’s acquisition and the changes made to the platform.
Services like account verification (the famous “blue checkmark”) became a subscription-based service available to any user, rather than a safety measure to verify accounts of celebrities and public figures.
Although many still use the app daily, a majority continue to refer to it as Twitter, posts as tweets and re-posts as re-tweets. While it’s under a new name, it’s always has been and always will be Twitter.
