There are two types of people: those who have been planning their 2024 Halloween costume since November 1, 2023, and those who will scramble last minute to track down a costume the day of. If you haven’t yet locked down a costume for this year’s festivities, consider this your sign to start planning. These are our predictions for this year’s most popular costumes, inspired by cultural events of the past year, that you can easily recreate this Halloween. From movies to memes, make this spooky season your best with one of these iconic looks.
Felix, Oliver, and Venetia from Saltburn
Saltburn was a cultural phenomenon when it came out last November. The extravagant costumes and glamorous, twisted characters made this film iconic. In the culminating party scene, Oliver dresses as a Midsummer Night’s Dream-themed stag, encapsulating his outsider status and hunter motives. To dress as this deviant villain, try an all-white outfit with deer antlers. To channel Felix, the film’s tormented saint, just throw on a white tank top, jeans, and gold wings. The costumes will be recognizable alone or as a pair. If you’re looking for a third, Venetia is also memorable with her pink/purple tones, heavy eyeliner, and sparkly fringe jacket.
Charli XCX and Co. (Troye Sivan, Billie Eilish, Lorde)
As one of this year’s most popular figures, there will be plenty of Charlis running around this Halloween. Luckily, the brat singer has debuted several partnerships over the last year, so there are lots of duo costumes to choose from. Charli and Troye Sivan are currently on their Sweat Tour, so you can gather inspo from their tour pics or their separate iconic music videos (like Troye Sivan’s “Rush” or “One of Your Girls”). You could also “work it out on the remix” with Lorde; as ‘look-alikes,” you and a friend can be coordinated with slight differences to commemorate this year’s best reconciliation. Billie Eilish also joined Charli on the track, “Guess,” and released a legendary music video. Copy their “Guess” outfits for the coolest Halloween costume (extra points for spare underwear falling out of your pockets).
TikTok Influencers
You either love them or hate them but their videos have taken over our lives. Fans have obsessed over the everlasting romance between Campbell Puckett and Jett Puckett, famously known as Jett and “Pookie”. Get on your best dinner outfit and have a partner dress in khakis and a suit jacket, paired with a distinguished side part. The key element to this costume is introducing Pookie to others and consistently remarking: “Pookie is looking absolutely fire tonight.” On a somewhat different side of TikTok, the Mormon influencer wives have recently left our vertical screens and entered the reality sphere with their new Hulu show, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives. The uniform is simple: hair and eyelash extensions, a monochrome yoga set or sweatsuit, and Stanley cups filled with diet soda. The more members and extensions you include in this costume, the better.
Cocktails and Go-To Drinks
2024 has been the year of beverages, so cocktail-themed outfits like Aperol Spritz, Espresso Martini, and Vodka Redbull will be very popular this year. These are more interpretive costumes so sticking to color themes and logos will be important. Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi is another easy beverage to emulate, with pops of red and themed merchandise you probably already own.
Love Island USA Royalty
Love Island USA is one of the biggest shows of the year. What made the show so popular was the contestants: their catchphrases, idiosyncratic style, and dynamic personalities. One contestant is a man that people either love or hate: Rob Rausch, iconic for his signature overalls, snake tattoo, and air of toxicity. “PPG” is another perfect costume for iconic best friend trios. Other look ideas? The people’s princess: Leah Kateb in her night one purple, Jana Craig in her signature red, and anything that Serena Page wore as she dominated the fashion game that season.
Pop Girl Summer, Continued
Pop-girl summer continues into pop-girl fall. Along with Charli XCX, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, and Sabrina Carpenter are running the game. Olivia Rodrigo has her Guts Tour attire and Sabrina Carpenter reps her Short n’ Sweet album with 50s-inspired mini dresses and lipstick stains. For those who do not like to dress up, a white tank top and rebellious personality is the only thing needed to dress like her current Irish boo, Barry Keoghan. Chappell Roan has enough iconic outfits from her music videos and performances to make up a group costume.
Wicked
A Wizard of Oz costume is one of the classics. This year, however, with the new Wicked movie coming out, these costumes will have a new modern twist. Ariana Grande’s Glinda requires anything fluffy and white pink, while Cynthia Erivo brings the drama with green skin and a witch hat as Elphaba.
