Theatre Kids Being Theatre Kids: The Dramatics of the ‘Wicked’ Press Tour Unpacked

In case you missed it, because you’re on a much-needed social media break: the press tour for Wicked has brought out the waterworks for stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. It seems like every interview question has made these two start crying— and for good reason! These two stars have gotten so close in the filming and post-production process for Wickedand fans are loving the pair together. So now, as the film is finally coming out, let’s take a look at some of the most memorable moments from the Wicked press tour.

Starting with this sweet moment captured in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, fans learn that Ariana Grande used her full name in the credits for the upcoming movie. In the final moments of the film, Ariana Grande-Butera will be flashing on the screen. This comes after years of a very public rebuilding of her and her father’s relationship, which was seen through Grande’s concerts where she performed hit song “thank u, next.”

Erivo and Grande are seen sharing the sweet moment explaining to the interviewer the moment when Grande announced to her co-star that she would be using her father’s last name in the credits of the movie. She attributes this decision to the growth she endured throughout this project. She says that, “[Ariana Grande-Butera] was my name when I first saw Wicked and… this role and this project helped me come home to little Ari.” We here at Just N Life are so happy for her!

People on social media have been very quick to comment that they believe this bond is just a PR stunt. How could they have become besties so quickly? Let’s not forget, this movie has been in the works for years; it’s been a 3-year-long process. Not to mention, as theatre people, these roles are essentially dream roles for anyone who has performed. Thus, this project has been an emotional one for the pair. The surrealism of having it be out in the universe has hit them, and they are more than aware of the emotional reality of their press tour.

Despite all the tearful moments, every interview proves just how close this cast got during the long production period. That’s what happens when you do a theatrical show… theatre kids bond like no other! That’s also where the waterworks are coming from— just theatre kids being theatre kids.

Even without tears, we can see the unbreakable bond between cast members. Erivo and Grande have shared in many interviews their matching Wicked-themed tattoos. This is clearly not a PR stunt— besties who get tattoos together, stay together!

It’s so clear that this pair have taken good care of these beloved characters and the well-known story. They seem so ready for it to hit the theaters and for audiences to share in their emotions with them. So, we can overlook the tears shed on the press tour, because everyone’s going to be sobbing in theaters once they see the actual movie itself.
