Legendary 90s alt-rock band Oasis has announced a miraculous comeback with select shows in the UK later this year. This comeback is important not only due to the band’s stature but also because of the sheer size of the rift between brothers and bandmates Noel and Liam Gallagher that has been festering essentially since the start of Oasis’ career.

Oasis burst onto the scene in 1994 with their landmark album Definitely Maybe, a record that cemented Oasis as the forerunners of British rock at the time. This only continued with (What’s The Story) Morning Glory, an album that gave birth to omnipresent hits like “Champagne Supernova” and “Wonderwall.” However, the duo of Noel and Liam Gallagher started falling apart just as fast as Oasis had risen to the top of the world.
The first time tensions exploded was in 1994 at a show in LA, where Liam threw a tambourine at Noel, causing him to temporarily leave the band. After he rejoined, and the recording for (What’s The Story) Morning Glory started, an incident occurred when Noel allegedly hit Liam over the head with a cricket bat, out of anger that he brought some people over to the studio. Later on, an interview with NME revealed the pair throwing childish insults at each other. This was released as a single called “Wibbling Rivarly” which features no music, just the audio of Liam and Noel verbally bashing each other on air. In a testament to how big Oasis was at the time, it charted at 52 on the UK charts, the highest an interview has ever charted on the radio.
The following year, as Oasis was scheduled to play the wildly popular “MTV: Unplugged,” Noel was the only member who performed, as Liam stood with the audience and heckled his brother. Liam then refused to go on Oasis’ scheduled tour to figure out house-related stuff with his wife at the time. In 2008 a fight broke out between the two on tour due to Liam questioning if Noel was truly the father of his daughter, Anias, who Noel had with his ex-wife Meg Matthews. The final argument between the two came in 2009 when an argument supposedly started over an ad for Liam’s clothing brand. According to The Rolling Stone, this eventually escalated until Liam allegedly began swinging one of Noel’s guitars “like an axe.” Noel announced that night that he had officially quit Oasis, a decision that has stood until this last week.
With the short reunion tour of Oasis announced, fans are wondering how, and if, the Gallagher brothers were able to sort out their differences. As of now, there’s really no telling, as neither has made any comments regarding their relationship post-reunion. We will all wait with baited breath to see what Oasis looks like as the return to the stage for the first time in over 15 years.
