Spoilers for Season 1 of Nobody Wants This below.
Nobody Wants This, which released on Sept. 26, has made its way near the top of Netflix’s most-viewed list, and for good reason. The sitcom stars Kristen Bell and Adam Brody who play an unlikely pairing: an agnostic podcaster, Joanne, and a rabbi, Noah Roklov, who recently went through a break-up.
Throughout season one, we are taken through the trials and tribulations that come with a budding relationship. When you’re meshing families on opposite ends of the religious spectrum, there’s going to be problems, but there were some quips along the way to ease the tension.
The chemistry between Joanne and Noah is palpable enough that by episode two it climaxes with their first kiss. The long and drawn-out scene that built up to the moment of the kiss had viewers on the edge of their seats.

But come episode six, their relationship becomes a little more authentic by showing that love isn’t all sunshine and rainbows when Noah gives Joanne the ick while meeting her family. Somehow, Noah is able to win her heart over again five minutes later which ruins the realism, though it might only be fair that authenticity has to be sacrificed when each episode runs under 30 minutes.
Their issues don’t end there. Noah’s ex-girlfriend attempts to throw a wrench in the relationship by spreading lies about him to Joanne’s sister and Noah’s sister-in-law who’s not too fond of Joanne either. Again, within one conversation, Joanne was able to believe Noah’s side of the story (he did end up to be telling the truth) and all was right with the world again.
But while their relationship may have been able to survive that drama, Noah’s overbearing mother, Bina Roklov, was a different story. Bina is adamant that her son is to have nothing to do with a woman who’s not Jewish.
Episode nine made things interesting when Joanne met Noah’s parents for the first time. Viewers are kept waiting for Bina’s harsh exterior to crack. While she appeared to drop hints that she would soon succumb to Joanne’s kindness and wit, Bina ended up dropping a bomb. As Joanne and Bina exchanged farewells, Bina whispered in her ear, “But you’re never gonna end up with my son,” which can be taken as the equivalent to a f— you.

Bina didn’t have a change of heart in the last episode of the show either, but that was no longer the issue in their relationship. Noah’s promotion to head rabbi meant he couldn’t be in a relationship with Joanne unless she converted to Judaism or he left his job. It was heartbreaking to watch Joanne leave him, but it did get a little ridiculous when they got back together in less than four minutes. However, it was wholesome to see that Noah chose love over his profession.
While the show was unrealistic at times, it had just enough moments that managed to make it ultimately enjoyable. What’s next for the couple? While we don’t know all the details, it’s been confirmed that Noah and Joanne will be returning to our screens for a second season.
The chemistry between Joanne and Noah is spot on!
The show leaves you wanting a second season. How could it just end like that?!
Bina Roklov is cruel in a good way.
Didn't love the ending of the show. It felt a little too unrealistic since the romance was a bit fast-paced.
Problems are resolved unrealistically quickly, which can take you out of the story.
