March is Women’s History Month, and what better way to celebrate all that our lovely ladies have done for us than by paying homage to their contributions to TV and film? From Emilia Clarke‘s Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones to Reese Witherspoon‘s Elle Woods in Legally Blonde, we’re paying homage to all female characters who made TV and film history.
Daenerys “Stormborn” Targaryen

The famous “Mother of Dragons,” Daenerys Targaryen, makes this list of life-changing characters for obvious reasons. Beginning under unencouraging circumstances, Emilia Clarke’s character stunned international TV as she transformed from timid into the fictional queen many have come to admire for her fight against slavery throughout the series. Talk about an absolute woman crush!
Princess Leia

We’re throwing it back to the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, where viewers were introduced to the legendary Princess Leia, played by Carrie Fisher. Fisher’s character is not only dynamic but equally as inspiring. Princess Leia displays admirable leadership qualities, courage, and resilience. You won’t see her playing the damsel in distress; she’ll be in the center of the fight!
Elle Woods

Elle Woods in the 2000’s hit Legally Blonde is every bit as inspiring as the bold and fierce princesses and heroines little girls have come to adore. Elle overcomes adversity as she attends Harvard Law, refusing to fit into the stereotypical cookie-cutter mold of a blonde. She gains wonderful insight throughout the movie about life, ethics, and motivation and gets her degree (all while remaining a fashion icon)!
Hermione Granger

“It’s Leviosa, not levio-sa!”
Emma Watson’s Hermione Granger from the Harry Potter series is the reason bookworms and avid movie watchers have been quoting her for years. Hermione is not only book-smart, but she’s big on justice, compassion, and would do just about anything for her friends! From her witty commentary to her academic excellence, Hermione remains a fan favorite today.
Wonder Woman

Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman made history in TV and film, and continues to change the game in today’s society. Wonder Woman was created as a reflection of William Moulton Marston’s feminist ideas. Marston explained that “[She] encourages women to stand up for themselves, to learn to fight, and be strong, so they don’t have to be scared, or depend on men.”
Olivia Pope

“If you want me, earn me!”
Kerry Washington quite literally created history with her character Olivia Pope from the TV series Scandal. The series won two Primetime Emmys and accumulated over twelve-million watchers. Washington brought Olivia Pope to life: the powerful, intelligent, and loyal female lead will make you pause to really take in her complexity. She navigates her professional life in the White House commendably and she also leaves room to be vulnerable with the audience when it comes to the character’s personal life.
