As Halloween approaches, so does an important question: “What am I/are we dressing up as this year?” And among the sea of cheesy store-bought costumes and flashy trends, there’s charm to a homemade, DIY costume. Iconic duos from cult classic films like Titanic, Pulp Fiction, and Grease stand the test of time 100 percent. And the best part of it all? These cinematic legends can be easily made at home.

There’s Jack and Rose, fighting for their love in a sinking world. Mia and Vincent, twisting through a neo-noir fever dream. Then there’s Sandy and Danny in their high school rebel phase. They’re universal comfort characters, in simpler terms. Beyond their societal and cultural impact, these couple costumes are 100 percent DIY. Not only does a homemade approach help you stand out in a crowd of mass-produced, cheap fabric, but it’s also better for the environment, costs less, and honestly, it’s more romantic.

Titanic: Jack and Rose
A tuxedo jacket, a white shirt, and some suspenders make a charmingly broke Jack Dawson. For Rose, all you need is a floor-length vintage-style dress, a faux diamond necklace, and some curls. You can thrift pieces or repurpose things you already own for both looks.

Pulp Fiction: Mia Wallace and Vincent Vega
You can smell the milkshake and adrenaline with this duo. Mia’s look is classy and simple. A black bob, a white button-down shirt, black pants, and a bold red lip. Vincent wears a black suit, a skinny tie, and a bored expression. If you’re going for the post-needle scene look, just splatter on some fake blood!
PULP FICTION was released 30 years ago this week. A cultural phenomenon on its release, and the movie that catapulted the career of writer-director Quentin Tarantino, the tale of how it came to be is the Big Kahuna Burger of making-of stories….

Grease: Danny and Sandy
This look is timeless. Leather jackets, black jeans, red heels, and an attitude. There’s also an option for a pre-makeover Sandy with a cardigan and poodle skirt. Either way, it’s perpetually adaptable.

DIY Is the Real Power Couple Move
Buying a prepackaged costume lacks soul and romance, to be frank. Making something together involves collaboration, laughter, and creativity. It allows couples to wear their imperfections proudly, whether it is the glue mishaps, last-minute stitching, or the surprised “this actually looks good” moment. That is the real cheesy love moment.
It’s also an act of rebellion against waste. According to Waste Managed, the polyester used in making 63 percent of fast fashion items takes between 20 and 200 years to decompose. DIYing with thrifted, repurposed, or natural materials has a smaller environmental impact, as these items don’t contribute as much to landfills or carbon emissions.

And the biggest saving is your budget! Most homemade costumes cost about half of what a store-bought version would. Parents.com reported that the average cost of a DIY costume is around $39, while a store-bought costume is roughly $75. They usually end up looking better, too, since your style will reflect more in the items that are already in your closet.
Skip Spirit Halloween this year. Pick your comfort cult-classic couple and craft a memory you will not throw in the trash on November 1.
