One of the biggest nods to an artist’s influence on pop culture is the sleek moon, the award that’s so heavy Tyla can’t even hold it: The MTV (Music Television) Award. Being awarded an MTV award signifies that an artist’s legend and icon status is written in the stars.
The MTV EMAs, Europe Music Awards, aired Sunday, Nov. 10, live from Manchester, U.K. Hosting the award show’s 30th commencement, singer-songwriter Rita Ora, made for a night to remember. Brought back after hosting the show two prior years, the, “How We Do (Party),” singer is the sole three-time host in the show’s history.

The night was high with anticipation and no guess as to which talent would win.
Taylor Swift took home four awards, namely, “Best Artist,” “Best Video,” recognizing her, “Fortnight,” collaboration with Post Malone, “Best Live Act,” and, “Best US Act.” The pop sensation now has a collection of moons and an army of moon men, as this follows her recent wins in seven of the categories at the MTV VMAs, which crowned her the most decorated solo artist of all time at the VMAs. “Best Artist,” was a stacked category at the EMAs, naming Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, Post Malone, RAYE, and Sabrina Carpenter in the tight competition against Swift. However, the face of Short n’ Sweet was recognized later for, “Best Song,” with the song of the summer, “Espresso.”
Other artists were honored with their first-time nominations at the MTV EMAs, including Chappell Roan, Kehlani, Tinashe, and Tyla. Tyla’s dream of becoming South Africa’s superstar is now a reality, reinforced by her wins in three categories: “Best Afrobeats,” “Best R&B,” and, “Best African Act.”

Other notable wins include Ariana Grande’s, “Best Pop,” win, Calvin Harris’, “Best Electronic,” win, and the, “Best Hip-Hop,” award going to Eminem.
What’s a Music Television awards show without an anticipated lineup of artists and performances? Featured on-stage artists included Benson Boone performing, “Slow It Down,” and, “Beautiful Things,” Busta Rhymes, K-Pop girl group Le Sserafim, Peso Pluma, Pet Shop Boys, RAYE, Shawn Mendes with his, “Heart of Gold,” performance, Teddy Swims, Tyla singing her hit singles, “Water,” and, “PUSH 2 START,” and girl band, The Warning.
In remembrance of former One Direction member, Liam Payne, and his tragic passing last month, the music awards offered kind words and condolences. Ora had the honor of leading the tribute, giving an emotional speech about Payne’s mark on the world.
“Night Changes,” by One Direction, played out after the narration. The tribute was representative of just how much Payne was loved in the music industry by artists and fans alike.
The 2024 MTV EMAs celebrated creativity and talent across all musical genres, recognizing and uplifting pop culture legacies and industry talent.
