Twenty-five years ago, the princess of R&B left all of the genre’s hearts broken when she passed in a tragic plane crash. At age 11, she landed a five-night stint performing with Gladys Knight in Las Vegas per her official biography. From there, the Brooklyn native soared into stardom: later becoming a renowned American singer, actress, dancer, and model. She stunned in Romeo Must Die, made us forever bump to “Are You That Somebody,” and created timeless looks that the girlies are still recreating in 2026.
At only 22, Aaliyah left such a mark on the world. The question is: what happened that day in 2001 that closed the curtains on such a remarkable soul?
The Making of “Rock The Boat”
Before her passing, the R&B princess left us with a beat worthy of top 5 on any of our playlists. As People magazine details, Aaliyah had been wrapping filming for her “Rock the Boat” music video in the Bahamas and planning to return to the U.S. on a charter plane. The strange part? People references The New York Times report on the plane, which “was changed at the last minute, downsizing the aircraft’s weight limit.”
Nearly two decades later, author Kathy Iandoli released a biography about the late singer, including stunning information surrounding her last hours. Baby Girl: Better Known as Aaliyah, released in 2021, acknowledged the “possibility that the late singer may have been drugged before boarding her final flight,” according to abcnews. In her interview with the digital news division, Iandoli maintains that “You can’t be told that someone was handed a pill and moments later was brought upon a plane—after moments before that she was adamant about not getting on,” she continued. “Now, whatever that pill was, I can’t say. But what I can say is that she didn’t want to get on the plane.”
What’s important to note is that Iandoli has made it clear that Aaliyah being drugged was just a possibility; something she clarifies in a highly circulated tweet was not written in her book.
Did Someone Kill Aaliyah? Fan Speculations
A last-minute aircraft change. A possibility of a sedative. A tragic plane crash. Pair that with the confirmation by The New York Times that Aaliyah’s pilot had traces of cocaine and alcohol in his system in August of 2001? It’s no wonder that such a tragic ending has fans of the princess of R&B speculating whether someone stirred their fingers into Aaliyah’s flight from the Bahamas.
In recent years, Reddit users have gone into an uproar over a Beyoncé and Jay-Zconspiracy theory that sparked rumors across socials. A few users found it suspicious that the “Morning Dew (Donk)” singer rose to fame shortly after the 22-year-old’s death. Others seem to be connecting a possible involvement to not only Beyoncé, but Jay-Z.
What’s more, R Kelly has come back into the speculating eye as well. Married to the late R&B princess in 1994, the former singer-songwriter was convicted of sex-trafficking charges, racketeering, and sexual abuse of minors in July of 2019. Questions have been raised about R Kelly by fans of Aaliyah—especially following her passing—for their illegal marriage. The convicted trafficker was a whopping 27 years old and the young singer only 15.

Conspiracy theories aside, Aaliyah left this world and with it, many broken hearts for her and her loved ones.
