The legacy of Wakanda’s Kingdom continues with a new Black Panther, and his name is David Jonsson.
Ryan Coogler, the Director of the Black Panther films, announced at Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel last Saturday that Jonsson would now be leading the role in future films.
Jonsson will step into the role of Prince T’Challa, the son of King T’Challa, who first appeared in the mid-credits scene of 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. He will lead Black Panther 3, when it premieres on Dec. 15, 2028, with Coogler returning to direct the third film in the series.
The film will be set after Avengers: Secret Wars, which is scheduled for release in 2027. This means we will get to explore the fully transformed MCU and a new era for Wakanda. It will redefine the role of Black Panther for the next generation after Doomsday and Secret Wars.
Marvel Studios took fans by surprise at the Hall H presentation at SDCC when Coogler revealed that Alien: Romulus star Jonsson will play an adult version of T’Challa’s son. This continues the story of the character introduced in the post-credit scene of Wakanda Forever.
What Do We Know So Far About Black Panther 3?
Casting an older T’Challa Jr suggests there might be a time jump or a timeline reset. This would allow the character to be older and take on the role of Black Panther, possibly linked to events in Secret Wars.
The film arrives after the reality-altering events that take place in Doomsday and Secret Wars, which will mean Jonsson’s T’Challa will not only inherit the vibranium and suit, but he will also carry the weight of the legacy and throne of his late father, as the new MCU evolves around him.
When the casting was announced, Jonsson was joined on stage by Letitia Wright, who plays Shuri, T’Challa’s sister in the Black Panther series, and Winston Duke, who plays M’Baku. Both actors will return in their roles in the third movie.
According to Deadline, Denzel Washington may join the franchise in a still-undisclosed role. Beyond the Comic-Con announcements, Marvel has kept the rest of the cast under wraps, though several stars from the first two Black Panther films will return for the third installment
At the time of this writing, there is still no first look at Black Panther 3, nor is there a subtitle for the film. Reactions To The New Addition
After the success of the first Black Panther film in 2018, fans were excited to see more of Chadwick Boseman as the lead. However, Boseman sadly passed away in 2020 after battling cancer.
For years, fans have speculated about who will become the next King of Wakanda. Many hoped Damson Idris would take up the mantle, but that didn’t happen. Reactions are mixed, but a lot of people are praising Jonsson, saying he shares many similarities with the late Boseman.
In an interview with EW, Wright expressed excitement about the wonderful news, calling it “a blessing for a special person with a kind heart.”
“The news was really beautiful to hear because I have a personal connection to David. To see the full circle of that today, I’m still living in it. We’re both still checking in with each other about it.”
Wright sent a heartfelt message to fans during the interview, saying: “It’s beautiful to see the arc of this character, in 2018, starting as this beautiful scientist in the lab just trying to help her big brother out, to just elevating and growing and now being a source of wisdom for her young nephew,”
Jonsson became emotional among the cheers and shouts for his casting during Marvel’s panel at Comic-Con, where he humbly thanked Coogler and Kevin Feige for blessing him with the opportunity of taking this role.
As Wright reflects on Shuri’s journey and Jonsson embraces his new role with gratitude, Black Panther 3 promises to honor Wakanda’s legacy while opening an exciting new chapter for the MCU.
