In our increasingly digital world, it’s become the norm for celebrity couples to announce their separation via social media. And though divorce announcements always make waves, the Internet was especially shocked by the recent post announcing the split between Australian actress Isla Fisher and English comedian and actor Sacha Baron Cohen after 13 years of marriage.
In a photo uploaded to Fisher’s Instagram story on April 5, the couple are seen sporting matching tennis outfits. “After a long tennis match lasting over twenty years,” begins the statement alongside the photo, “we are finally putting our racquets down.”

“In 2023 we jointly filed to end our marriage,” the statement continues. “We have always prioritized our privacy, and have been quietly working through this change. We forever share in our devotion and love for our children. We sincerely appreciate your respecting our family’s wish for privacy.”

Some theorized that the split was a result of actress Rebel Wilson’s new memoir, Rebel Rising, in which she accuses Baron Cohen, 52, of misconduct on the set of the 2016 film The Brothers Grimsby, though the Borat actor vehemently denies these claims. Others wondered if there’d been signs that the couple, who met in 2001 and tied the knot in 2010, had been headed for divorce for a while as reports surfaced that Fisher, 48, had sought advice from a top celebrity divorce lawyer in 2022.
But what’s been most intriguing to the public amid the speculation is the way the pair decided to share the news of their split.

As the news hit Twitter, some users couldn’t help but make light of the unique way the couple made the announcement.
Isla Fisher said “that lil earthquake in New York didn’t do enough, let ME shake the table a lil bit” and announced her divorce via Instagram STORIES. Not even a POST. She said um chile anyways saur

Others wondered if the move was meant as a PR stunt of some kind.
To all those drooling over Isla Fisher after the divorce announcement: Have you considered this might be a prank? She's a comedic actress and he's frickin' Borat/Ali G to name a couple of his prank characters.

Though Baron Cohen and Fisher’s quirky announcement has attracted attention, they’re far from the only celebrity couple to call it quits in 2024. The news of their separation follows the divorce of Chance the Rapper and Kirsten Corley earlier this month, Ellie Goulding and Caspar Jopling back in March, and Bachelorette stars Rachel Lindsay and Bryan Abasolo in January, among others.
